# AI use cases for Comma (AFK-surf/Comma)

Repo: [AFK-surf/Comma](https://github.com/AFK-surf/Comma) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/afk-surf-comma/

Comma is an open-source, always-on personal agent that turns goals into persistent Tasks, runs them in agent loops, and works across your computers, phone, and cloud.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to run your own Comma instance with Docker Compose with Comma

Repo: [AFK-surf/Comma](https://github.com/AFK-surf/Comma) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 90 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start a single-node personal agent on your own machine with one compose command.

**Who it is for:** A privacy-minded individual or small team that wants a personal agent running on infrastructure they control instead of the hosted service.

**The problem:** The hosted service at comma.surf may not fit your privacy or control needs, so you want the same always-on agent under your own control.

**The outcome:** A single-node Comma instance running with its Web, Admin, Product API, and Salix dashboard interfaces, reachable on loopback by default.

### Steps

1. Run `cp .env.example .env` in the repository root.
2. Set COMMA_OWNER_EMAIL to your email address, and set COMMA_LLM_BASE_URL, COMMA_LLM_MODEL, and COMMA_LLM_API_KEY for your model provider in .env.
3. Run `docker compose up -d --build` and wait for the first build to finish.
4. Open the Comma Web address from the Interfaces table and request a login code with your email.
5. Read the code in the local inbox at the Mailpit address in the Interfaces table, then sign in.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone the AFK-surf/Comma repository and follow its Self-host with Docker Compose section to start a single-node instance for <owner email>. Report the Web, Admin, and Product API addresses from the Interfaces table and any build errors. Verify that the login code arrives in the local inbox before you finish.
```

### Caveat

The README says the local inbox is for loopback use only and that public access needs an HTTPS reverse proxy and a real SMTP server.

Risk, credentials: The model API key you put in .env and the secrets in the config volume must be kept private, and the config volume must not be deleted or regenerated.

## How to run Comma locally with a mock model for testing with Comma

Repo: [AFK-surf/Comma](https://github.com/AFK-surf/Comma) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start the backend and Web client without a model key and run the test suites.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants to explore or contribute to Comma and does not have a model provider key yet.

**The problem:** Setting up a model provider just to see how Comma works slows down development and testing.

**The outcome:** A local Comma backend and Web client running on a deterministic mock model, with the client and system test suites passing.

### Steps

1. Run `pnpm install` once in the repository root.
2. Run `make dev` to start the local backend and the Web client.
3. Sign in as comma-local@example.com and read the login code in Mailpit at the address shown in the README development section.
4. Run `make test-clients` from the repository root.
5. Run `make test-systems` from the repository root.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the AFK-surf/Comma repository, install dependencies with pnpm, start the local stack with make dev, and run make test-clients and make test-systems. Report which suites pass and which fail, with the failing test names. Verify that the mock model is in use by confirming the README says make dev uses a deterministic mock model.
```

### Caveat

The mock model in make dev is deterministic and does not give real model answers, so use a configured provider to test real behavior.

## How to set a Loop to wake Comma only when something needs it with Comma

Repo: [AFK-surf/Comma](https://github.com/AFK-surf/Comma) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have Comma write a small watcher that acts only when an inbox, repo, or feed changes.

**Who it is for:** A busy person or developer who keeps checking an inbox, repository, or feed for changes that need a decision.

**The problem:** Constant manual checking wastes time, but a full agent running all the time is expensive for quiet periods.

**The outcome:** A Loop that watches your chosen source, wakes the agent only on relevant events, and places any decision in Needs Review on the board.

### Steps

1. Ask Comma in chat to watch the inbox, repository, or feed you care about and describe what should trigger action.
2. Let Comma write the Loop, which the README describes as a small program that watches a source.
3. Check the board for the new Task in In progress.
4. Open Needs Review items and make the decision Comma asks for, or let Comma finish the work if you allowed it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using Comma from the AFK-surf/Comma project or the hosted comma.surf service, ask the agent to create a Loop that watches <inbox, repository, or feed> and wakes the agent only when <trigger>. Report the Loop's name and what it watches. Verify that a test event produces a Task on the board without waking the agent for unrelated events.
```

### Caveat

The README does not list which inbox, repository, or feed providers Loops support, so confirm the source works before relying on it.

## How to hand file edits on your Mac to Codex or Claude Code with Comma

Repo: [AFK-surf/Comma](https://github.com/AFK-surf/Comma) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Let Comma read files on your Mac and delegate changes to an agent you already use.

**Who it is for:** A developer whose code and files live on a Mac and who already uses Codex or Claude Code for coding work.

**The problem:** Switching between Comma, your files, and a coding agent means copying context by hand for every change.

**The outcome:** Comma reads the relevant Mac files, hands the change to Codex or Claude Code, and returns the result as a Task you can review.

### Steps

1. Install the Comma Mac app from the download link at comma.surf/download and connect it to Salix.
2. Open Comma's Mac settings and turn on Allow operations only for work you are ready to review. (inferred, check the README)
3. Ask Comma in chat to read the files for the change you need, then state the goal.
4. Ask Comma to pass the change to Codex or Claude Code as a Worker or Sub-agent.
5. Review the diff and the Task in Needs Review before accepting the result.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
On a Mac with the Comma Mac app connected to Salix, ask Comma to read the files in <project folder> and pass the change <describe change> to Codex or Claude Code. Report the files changed and the commands run. Verify the result by reviewing the diff before accepting the Task.
```

### Caveat

The README names Pi and Kimi as other hand-off targets but gives no setup detail for them, so this guide covers only Codex and Claude Code.

Risk, remote script: With Allow operations on, Comma can change files and run commands on your Mac, so review each Task before accepting its result.

Risk, credentials: Connecting your Mac through Salix gives Comma access to files there, so keep sensitive identity and private data on your device as the README advises.
