# AI use cases for Compass (AgriciDaniel/compass)

Repo: [AgriciDaniel/compass](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/compass) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/agricidaniel-compass/

Compass is a ready-made Obsidian vault template that runs daily questions, quarterly retreats, planning, habits, tasks, and writing in plain Markdown, with an AI assistant inside the vault.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to start a nightly journal with Compass daily questions with Compass

Repo: [AgriciDaniel/compass](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/compass) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Answer ten daily questions and write one journal line each night in an Obsidian vault.

**Who it is for:** A person who wants a simple nightly reflection habit and has never set up a personal knowledge system.

**The problem:** Most journaling habits die because the setup is too heavy. Starting with one short nightly routine is hard without a clear template.

**The outcome:** A working Compass vault with today's daily note, scored answers to the daily questions, and one journal line saved.

### Steps

1. Download the zip from Releases, or clone the repository. The repository root is the vault.
2. Open the folder in Obsidian using Open folder as vault.
3. When asked about Restricted mode, click Turn off, then run the command Reload app without saving.
4. Open 00 Dashboards/Setup.md and follow its checklist.
5. Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+D to open today's note, then Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Q to ask the questions. Answer 1 to 10 and write one line under ## Journal.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Compass vault at <vault path>, read AGENTS.md and Meta/Compass Config.md, then list the daily question properties (dq_*) and the habit properties (habit_*). Expected output: a short list of the questions and habits, with the folder where today's Daily note is stored. Verify that the lists match the questions in Meta/Compass Config.md.
```

### Caveat

The README says notes tagged example are seed data, so delete them as the Setup checklist asks before you rely on the dashboards.

## How to run a quarterly personal retreat in your vault with Compass

Repo: [AgriciDaniel/compass](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/compass) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Use the Personal Retreat template to review the quarter and set the next one.

**Who it is for:** A person who wants a structured quarterly review and has a few hours set aside to reflect.

**The problem:** Quarterly reviews tend to be skipped or stay vague because there is no fixed place to record the answers and the wheel of life scores.

**The outcome:** A YYYY-QN Personal Retreat note in 02 Retreats with the wheel of life scores in its properties and notes on the next quarter.

### Steps

1. Open 02 Retreats and create a new note named YYYY-QN Personal Retreat, using the Personal Retreat template in Templates.
2. Score each wheel of life area in the note properties, using the wheel_* areas listed in Meta/Compass Config.md.
3. Review the quarter using the prompts in the template and write the answers in the note body.
4. Link the retreat to Planning notes in 03 Planning, such as Life Theme and Core Values, and update them if they changed.
5. Use the Quarterly periodic note in 01 Journal/Quarterly to turn the retreat outcomes into the next quarter's plan.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Compass vault at <vault path>, read 02 Retreats and the wheel_* properties in Meta/Compass Config.md, then compare the two most recent YYYY-QN Personal Retreat notes. Expected output: a table of wheel areas with their scores for each quarter and the change between them. Verify that you did not edit any retreat text, since AGENTS.md says not to rewrite journal or planning text.
```

### Caveat

The README describes the retreat workflow as a template and guide, so the review itself stays manual; the agent prompt only reads and compares existing notes.

## How to triage your task list with an agent, approving each edit with Compass

Repo: [AgriciDaniel/compass](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/compass) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have a local agent sort Tasks.md while you approve every diff in Obsidian.

**Who it is for:** A person with a long capture list in Tasks.md who wants help sorting it but does not want an agent changing notes unseen.

**The problem:** The master task list grows faster than anyone reads it, and manual triage takes time away from the work itself.

**The outcome:** A triaged task list with edits you reviewed and approved one by one in Agent Client.

### Steps

1. Install and enable Agent Client in the vault, and point it at a local agent such as Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI.
2. Open the Assistant dashboard in 00 Dashboards and start the task triage prompt from the Prompts folder.
3. Let the agent read 08 Tasks/Tasks.md, 04 Projects, and 05 People, then propose changes.
4. Review each change in the diff view and approve only the ones you want. Leave auto-allow off.
5. Check the Task Dashboard in 00 Dashboards to confirm the result.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Compass vault at <vault path>, read AGENTS.md and 08 Tasks/Tasks.md, then group the open tasks by project or person. Expected output: a proposed list of groups and moves, with no file changed yet. Verify that every proposed edit is shown as a diff and that no note outside 08 Tasks, 04 Projects, and 05 People was touched.
```

### Caveat

The README says auto-allow ships off and every edit needs approval, so keep it that way for a first run.

Risk, credentials: Agent Client runs a local agent that can read the vault, so use a local agent account you trust and keep any agent keys out of the vault.

## How to connect Claude Code to your Obsidian vault over MCP with Compass

Repo: [AgriciDaniel/compass](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/compass) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Point Claude Code at Local REST API so it can read, search, and patch notes.

**Who it is for:** A developer or power user who already uses Claude Code and wants it to work directly on their Compass vault.

**The problem:** Copying notes into an agent chat is slow and loses structure, and the agent cannot act on the vault without a safe connection.

**The outcome:** Claude Code connected to the vault's MCP server, with read-only tools pre-approved and the key kept outside the vault.

### Steps

1. Enable the Local REST API community plugin in the vault and note the per-install key it generates on first load.
2. Confirm the MCP server is running at http://127.0.0.1:27123/mcp.
3. Register the server with `claude mcp add --scope user` and the URL above, storing the key outside the vault. (inferred, check the README)
4. Review .mcp.example.json and .claude/settings.json to see the read-only tool allowlist.
5. Ask Claude Code to search the vault and read one note to confirm the connection works.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Obsidian MCP server at http://127.0.0.1:27123/mcp for the Compass vault at <vault path>, list the available tools and search for notes tagged example. Expected output: the tool names and a count of matching notes. Verify that no note was written or patched during the check.
```

### Caveat

The README says the Local REST API bridge is desktop-only and the MCP server exposes 16 tools, so check which of them you allow before enabling write tools.

Risk, credentials: The Local REST API key grants access to the vault, so store it outside the vault and never commit .mcp.json or agent sessions.
