## How to get Claude Code answers you can skim at a glance with Attention Span

Repo: [alexgreensh/attention-span](https://github.com/alexgreensh/attention-span) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the Attention-kind output style so every answer leads with the conclusion and uses bold and arrows.

**Who it is for:** A developer using Claude Code who is tired, deep in focus, or has limited attention and finds long answers hard to read.

**The problem:** Default Claude Code replies are long and bury the answer in wind-up text, so the key point takes effort to find.

**The outcome:** Claude answers first in short spaced points marked with arrows, with the important words in bold, so you can read just the bold and get the answer.

### Steps

1. In Claude Code, run `/plugin marketplace add alexgreensh/attention-span`
2. Run `/plugin install attention-span`
3. Open `/config` and set Output style to Attention-kind, or type `/attention-kind` for a single conversation
4. Ask a question you would normally ask and check that the first line states the answer

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo alexgreensh/attention-span, install the attention-span plugin in Claude Code, then ask Claude this question: <your question>. Expected output: an answer that opens with the conclusion, uses arrow-marked points and bold key words. Verify that the first line of the reply gives the answer.
```

### Caveat

The README benchmark measures style-only changes and says it does not claim better answers, only shorter and easier to scan output.

## How to switch Claude to terse mode for heads-down work with Attention Span

Repo: [alexgreensh/attention-span](https://github.com/alexgreensh/attention-span) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the Spartan style to get blunt, compressed replies during focused coding with no conversational padding.

**Who it is for:** An engineer in a focused coding block who wants only the signal from Claude Code and no conversation.

**The problem:** Even with a friendly style, replies can carry extra warmth and transitions that slow down heads-down work.

**The outcome:** Claude gives maximum-compression replies with arrows and bold, no cushioning, so you get the signal quickly.

### Steps

1. Install the plugin with `/plugin marketplace add alexgreensh/attention-span` and `/plugin install attention-span`
2. Type `/spartan` to use the style for one conversation, or set Spartan under `/config` as the Output style
3. Ask your coding question and read the compressed reply
4. Switch back with `/attention-kind` or another style when you want a fuller explanation

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo alexgreensh/attention-span, install the attention-span plugin in Claude Code and use the Spartan style with /spartan, then ask Claude <your coding question>. Expected output: a terse, imperative reply with arrow-marked points and bold words, and no warm transitions. Verify that the reply contains no filler sentences before the answer.
```

### Caveat

Spartan is built for heads-down work where signal matters more than conversation, so it is not a fit for teaching or detailed explanations.

## How to turn project status into a standup checklist with Attention Span

Repo: [alexgreensh/attention-span](https://github.com/alexgreensh/attention-span) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the Rundown style to get a TL;DR and status checklist you can scan for standups and updates.

**Who it is for:** A team member or lead who must give status updates or run standups and needs a clear view of where work stands.

**The problem:** A plain paragraph status is hard to scan, and it is easy to miss which items are done, blocked or not started.

**The outcome:** Claude opens with a TL;DR and shows state as a checklist with status markers and numbered next choices, so the update is quick to read.

### Steps

1. Install the plugin with `/plugin marketplace add alexgreensh/attention-span` and `/plugin install attention-span`
2. Type `/rundown` in Claude Code, or set Rundown as the Output style under `/config`
3. Give Claude the facts for your status, such as counts and what is blocked
4. Check that the reply does not state any status you did not supply

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo alexgreensh/attention-span, install the attention-span plugin in Claude Code and use the Rundown style with /rundown. Then give Claude this status: <your status facts>. Expected output: a TL;DR line, a checklist with status markers, and numbered next steps. Verify that every status in the checklist comes from the facts you gave.
```

### Caveat

Rundown favors readability over brevity, so its replies run longer than the other two styles.

## How to get commit messages from Claude with no chat wrapper with Attention Span

Repo: [alexgreensh/attention-span](https://github.com/alexgreensh/attention-span) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the Attention-kind style so that when you ask for a message or commit, you get just that text.

**Who it is for:** A developer who asks Claude Code for commit messages or other short deliverables and wants clean text to paste.

**The problem:** Chat replies often wrap a requested message in extra commentary, so you have to trim it before using it.

**The outcome:** When you ask for a message or commit, Claude returns just that deliverable, which the repo's benchmark reports for 88% of tasks.

### Steps

1. Install the plugin with `/plugin marketplace add alexgreensh/attention-span` and `/plugin install attention-span`
2. Set Attention-kind as the Output style under `/config`
3. Ask Claude for a commit message for your staged changes
4. Paste the reply as-is and check that no chat text surrounds it

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo alexgreensh/attention-span, install the attention-span plugin in Claude Code with Attention-kind as the Output style. Then ask Claude to write a commit message for <describe your change>. Expected output: only the commit message, with no wrapper text. Verify that the reply contains nothing except the message.
```

### Caveat

The 88% clean-deliverable figure comes from the repo's own benchmark, so your results may differ with other tasks and models.
