## How to analyze R8 shrinking config with the r8-analyzer skill with Skills

Repo: [android/skills](https://github.com/android/skills) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the r8-analyzer skill so an agent can review R8 configuration in an Android project.

**Who it is for:** Android developer whose release build is shrunk or obfuscated with R8 and who needs a second look at the configuration.

**The problem:** R8 rules are hard to check by hand, and LLMs are noted in the README as underperforming on some workflows.

**The outcome:** The agent works from the r8-analyzer skill's instructions when it reviews the project's R8 setup.

### Steps

1. Install Android CLI from developer.android.com/tools/agents/android-cli.
2. Run `android skills add r8-analyzer --project=.` in the project root.
3. Open your agent in the project directory.
4. Ask the agent to review the R8 configuration and explain each suggested change.
5. Build the release variant and test it before you accept any rule change.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the android/skills repository and its r8-analyzer skill, review the R8 configuration in <project path> and list suggested changes with a reason for each. Verify by building the release variant of the app and confirming it still runs.
```

### Caveat

The README says AI can make mistakes, so every suggested R8 change needs to be checked by a build and a test run.

## How to make an Android app UI edge-to-edge with an agent with Skills

Repo: [android/skills](https://github.com/android/skills) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the Android Skills and ask the agent for an edge-to-edge UI change that the Skills guide.

**Who it is for:** Android app developer who wants the screen content to extend behind the system bars and needs the change done in an existing project.

**The problem:** Edge-to-edge layout changes touch many screens and can break insets, so a general agent may get details wrong.

**The outcome:** The agent applies an edge-to-edge UI change to the app, guided by the installed Skills.

### Steps

1. Install Android CLI from developer.android.com/tools/agents/android-cli.
2. Run `android skills add --all` to install all Android Skills for the detected agents.
3. Open your agent in the Android project directory.
4. Prompt the agent with: Make my app UI edge-to-edge.
5. Run the app on a device or emulator and check that content sits correctly under the status and navigation bars.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the android/skills repository, change the UI of the Android project at <project path> to be edge-to-edge. Report which screens were changed and why. Verify by running the app and checking that no content is hidden behind the system bars.
```

### Caveat

The README asks users to double-check results because AI can make mistakes, so review each changed screen on a device.

## How to build Wear OS Compose UI with the wear-compose-m3 skill with Skills

Repo: [android/skills](https://github.com/android/skills) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the wear-compose-m3 skill so an agent can build Wear OS screens with Compose Material 3.

**Who it is for:** Developer building a Wear OS app with Jetpack Compose who wants the agent to follow the Wear Compose Material 3 guidance.

**The problem:** Wear OS layouts and components differ from phone layouts, and the README names this skill as one covering a specific Wear workflow.

**The outcome:** The agent writes or updates Wear OS Compose screens using the wear-compose-m3 skill instructions.

### Steps

1. Install Android CLI from developer.android.com/tools/agents/android-cli.
2. Run `android skills add wear-compose-m3 --project=.` in the Wear OS project root. (inferred, check the README)
3. Open your agent in the project directory.
4. Ask the agent to build or update one Wear OS screen with Compose Material 3.
5. Run the Wear OS app on a watch emulator and check the new screen.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the android/skills repository and its wear-compose-m3 skill, add a Wear OS screen to the project at <project path> with Compose Material 3. List the files changed. Verify by running the Wear OS app on an emulator and opening the new screen.
```

### Caveat

The README does not describe what the wear-compose-m3 skill covers in detail, so confirm its guidance against the official docs before relying on it.

## How to add Android Skills to Claude Code as a plugin with Skills

Repo: [android/skills](https://github.com/android/skills) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Add the android/skills marketplace and install the plugin inside Claude Code.

**Who it is for:** Developer who already uses Claude Code and wants Android Skills available without installing them project by project.

**The problem:** Setting up Skills by hand for each project takes extra steps when the agent is already the main coding tool.

**The outcome:** The android-skills plugin is installed in Claude Code, so relevant Android Skills activate during normal work.

### Steps

1. Open Claude Code.
2. Run `/plugin marketplace add android/skills`.
3. Run `/plugin install android-skills@android-skills`.
4. Ask Claude Code for an Android task, such as: Make my app UI edge-to-edge.
5. Check that the agent's reply follows the Android guidance and review the changes it makes.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In Claude Code, add the android/skills marketplace and install the android-skills plugin, then ask it to make the UI of the Android project at <project path> edge-to-edge. Report the files changed. Verify by checking that the plugin appears as installed before the task starts.
```

### Caveat

The README says public contributions are not accepted, so feedback and skill requests go through GitHub issues only.

## How to keep installed Android Skills up to date with Skills

Repo: [android/skills](https://github.com/android/skills) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the update command so every installed skill matches the current repository version.

**Who it is for:** Android developer who installed Skills weeks or months ago and wants the agent to use the current guidance.

**The problem:** Installed skill files do not change on their own, so an agent can keep using older instructions.

**The outcome:** All installed Android Skills are updated, or a single named skill is updated.

### Steps

1. Install Android CLI from developer.android.com/tools/agents/android-cli, if it is not already installed.
2. Run `android skills update --all` to update all installed Skills.
3. To update one skill, run `android skills update wear-compose-m3`.
4. Start a new agent session so it loads the updated Skills.
5. Ask the agent one task that uses a skill you updated to confirm it responds as expected.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Update all Android skills from the android/skills repository with the Android CLI, then ask the agent to perform one Android task at <project path>. Report which skills were updated. Verify by confirming the update command finished without errors before running the task.
```

### Caveat

The README does not say how often Skills are published, so check for updates before important work rather than assuming they are current.
