# AI use cases for Axiomcodegraph (AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph)

Repo: [AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph](https://github.com/AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/axiomcodeai-axiomcodegraph/

AxiomCode Graph is a tool that builds a call-graph knowledge map of a codebase so AI agents and developers can query exact call paths and impact instead of grepping.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to trace the exact call path between two functions with Axiomcodegraph

Repo: [AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph](https://github.com/AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Show every hop from a caller to a target function, with source lines, before you change code.

**Who it is for:** A developer who has to change a function and needs to know how a caller reaches it, especially through interfaces or other files.

**The problem:** Grep cannot see calls made through an interface, a subclass or a callback, so a search can miss the real route through the code.

**The outcome:** A numbered list of places along the call chain, each with the surrounding code and the line that matters, so you can see the full route before editing.

### Steps

1. Install the engine with `npm i -g @axiomcode/code-graph`.
2. Confirm the install with `axiomcode --version`.
3. In your project folder, run `axiomcode path main Ledger.put` with your own caller and target names.
4. Read each numbered hop and its source line, checking that the chain matches the code you plan to change.
5. Add `.axiomcode/` to your `.gitignore` so the graph folder stays out of version control.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the <repo> project, run `axiomcode path <caller> <target>` to list the call chain from <caller> to <target>. Report each hop with its file and line. Verify that every hop is marked resolved or one of a set, and say which hops are candidates rather than confirmed.
```

### Caveat

The README benchmarks cover Java and TypeScript only, so Python, JavaScript and C# results are not measured there.

## How to find what breaks before changing a function with Axiomcodegraph

Repo: [AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph](https://github.com/AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Ask an agent which files and tests a change to one function can affect.

**Who it is for:** A developer or tech lead reviewing a planned change who wants the scope of its downstream effects before the agent edits anything.

**The problem:** A missed dependency turns one change into an incomplete fix and a second round of work, and reading the file in front of you cannot reveal calls that are decided elsewhere.

**The outcome:** A list of files that must change, the entry points that reach the function, and the test files that reach it, with each printed edge checked against the graph.

### Steps

1. Install the engine with `npm i -g @axiomcode/code-graph`.
2. Install the plugin in your agent, for example in Claude Code with `claude plugin marketplace add AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph && claude plugin install axiomcode@axiomcode`.
3. Start a new agent session, because plugins load at startup.
4. Ask the agent in plain words, for example: What breaks if I change SqlStore.put?
5. Review the numbered impact list and the verified line before approving any edit.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the <repo> project, use the axiomcode impact tool on <function> and list the files that must change, the entry points that reach it and the test files that reach it. Expect a numbered list with file and line for each item. Verify that the output ends with a verified line showing the edges were looked up again.
```

### Caveat

The hooks that report what an edit breaks run only in Claude Code, Codex CLI and desktop app, Cursor and Gemini CLI, while Copilot CLI, VS Code, Windsurf and Devin CLI get the tools and skill without hooks.

## How to let an agent explore a new codebase without grep with Axiomcodegraph

Repo: [AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph](https://github.com/AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Give an AI agent a graph of the code so it queries structure instead of searching text.

**Who it is for:** A developer who hands an unfamiliar repository to an AI coding agent and wants fewer wasted searches and tokens.

**The problem:** Agents that grep miss calls hidden behind interfaces, and their output gets truncated, so they silently skip code they never saw.

**The outcome:** An agent that reads the graph through the skill and tools, asking for call paths and impact directly, with fewer search steps spent exploring the code.

### Steps

1. Install the engine with `npm i -g @axiomcode/code-graph`.
2. Install the plugin for your agent, for example in Codex CLI with `codex plugin marketplace add AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph && codex plugin add axiomcode@axiomcode`.
3. Start a new agent session in the project so the skill and tools load.
4. Ask the agent to explore a task, for example by naming the function you want to understand.
5. Check that the agent cites graph results with file and line rather than unverified search matches.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the <repo> project, explore the code needed for <task> by querying the axiomcode graph instead of grepping. Report the functions involved, their file and line, and the number of tool calls used. Verify that each claimed call relationship appears in the graph output.
```

### Caveat

The README reports up to 50% fewer tool calls to explore a new codebase in its benchmarks, and that figure is the project's own measurement, not an independent result.

## How to connect any MCP client to the code graph with Axiomcodegraph

Repo: [AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph](https://github.com/AxiomCodeAI/axiomcodegraph) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Add one config entry so an MCP-capable agent can query the graph.

**Who it is for:** A developer using an MCP client that is not one of the named plugin agents and who wants the graph inside it.

**The problem:** Without a server entry, the graph built by the engine is only reachable from the shell, not from the agent handling the task.

**The outcome:** An MCP client that starts the axiomcode server and can answer code questions from the same graph the CLI uses.

### Steps

1. Install Node.js 22.13 or newer and Python 3.
2. Add the entry below to your MCP client config file, using its server section:
3. { "mcpServers": { "axiomcode": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@axiomcode/code-graph", "mcp"] } } }
4. Start a new session in your MCP client so it loads the server.
5. Ask the client a call-path question about one function in your project and check the result against `axiomcode path <caller> <target>` from the shell. (inferred, check the README)

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the axiomcode MCP server in <repo>, find the call path to <target> and list each hop with file and line. Expect the same hops that `axiomcode path` prints in the shell. Verify that both outputs match before reporting.
```

### Caveat

The MCP server runs through npx, so the first start needs network access to fetch the package, and the README does not list the four MCP tool names beyond the ones shown in examples.
