ctx-handoff is a Claude Code plugin that hands long sessions off to a fresh conversation, keeps the cache warm while you are away, and saves what you teach Claude as project notes.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to hand off a full Claude Code session to a fresh chat with CTX Handoff Mod

Repo: [cablate/ctx-handoff-mod](https://github.com/cablate/ctx-handoff-mod) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Automatically write a summary, clear a nearly full conversation and continue in a new one with the work intact.

**Who it is for:** A developer in a long Claude Code session on a large-context model who keeps hitting the context limit mid-task.

**The problem:** When the conversation nears full, you have to write a summary by hand, run /clear and paste the summary back in.

**The outcome:** At the threshold, a summary is written, the conversation is cleared and a fresh one continues, with anything typed in the meantime carried over.

### Steps

1. Run `claude plugin marketplace add cablate/ctx-handoff-mod`
2. Run `claude plugin install ctx-handoff@ctx-handoff-mod`
3. Start a new session and type `/handoff`; check that it shows the context and threshold lines
4. Open the panel with `/handoff panel`, go to the Settings tab (5), and turn on `auto_handoff`
5. Keep working; when the context reaches the threshold, confirm the new conversation starts with the summary

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In Claude Code, install the ctx-handoff-mod plugin from cablate/ctx-handoff-mod, then turn on auto_handoff in the /handoff panel Settings tab for <project path>. Expected output: `/handoff` prints a context line with a threshold of 600000. Verify that the setting shows as on before the session ends.
```

### Caveat

The README says the plugin is experimental because Claude Code mods are still in early access, and auto_handoff is off by default.

## How to keep a long chat's cache warm while you step away with CTX Handoff Mod

Repo: [cablate/ctx-handoff-mod](https://github.com/cablate/ctx-handoff-mod) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Send small keep-alive requests during idle time, then resume the saved handoff or the same chat on return.

**Who it is for:** A developer who leaves a large Claude Code conversation for an hour or more and dreads the full-price reread on return.

**The problem:** After an idle break, the next message rereads the whole conversation at full price because the cache has expired.

**The outcome:** The cache is kept warm for up to about 4 hours, and on return you choose to start fresh from the saved summary or stay where you were.

### Steps

1. Run `claude plugin install ctx-handoff@ctx-handoff-mod` if it is not installed yet
2. Type `/handoff` in the session to confirm that cache refresh is on
3. Before leaving a conversation you do not want refreshed, run `/handoff away pause`
4. On return, run `/handoff resume` to start fresh from the saved summary, or type `continue` to stay where you were
5. Run `/handoff resume` again later and restart the timer with `resume` if you paused it

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In Claude Code with ctx-handoff-mod installed, check the cache refresh status for <conversation> using `/handoff`. Expected output: a line reporting how many refreshes were used this idle period. Verify the status line before stepping away.
```

### Caveat

On an API key, Bedrock or Vertex the cache lasts only 5 minutes, so the README says to run `/handoff refresh off` in those setups.

## How to turn repeated instructions into project notes with CTX Handoff Mod

Repo: [cablate/ctx-handoff-mod](https://github.com/cablate/ctx-handoff-mod) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Save the preferences, corrections and facts you keep repeating into a notes file loaded into every new chat.

**Who it is for:** A developer who keeps re-teaching Claude the same project conventions across new conversations.

**The problem:** A new conversation forgets instructions you already gave, so you repeat them every session.

**The outcome:** Preferences, corrections and facts are kept in one Markdown notes file per project, and an instruction repeated three times becomes a line in your repo.

### Steps

1. Run `claude plugin install ctx-handoff@ctx-handoff-mod` if it is not installed yet
2. Give Claude a preference or correction in normal conversation, as you would anyway
3. Open `/handoff panel` to view memories, rules and the latest notes update
4. Delete any memory you do not want; note that it returns only if you bring it up again in a new part of the conversation
5. Check the Markdown notes file in `~/.claude/projects/` for your project

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using Claude Code with ctx-handoff-mod, record a repeated instruction for <project path> and then inspect the notes file under ~/.claude/projects/ for that project. Expected output: a Markdown notes file containing the instruction. Verify that the entry appears in the file and in the panel.
```

### Caveat

Notes are updated from the new part of the conversation by a model the README names, so review the panel output before relying on the notes.

## How to approve guards for mistakes Claude keeps repeating with CTX Handoff Mod

Repo: [cablate/ctx-handoff-mod](https://github.com/cablate/ctx-handoff-mod) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Review drafted tool-call checks that remind or block Claude, and apply only the ones you approve.

**Who it is for:** A developer whose Claude Code sessions keep retrying failing commands or saying done without testing.

**The problem:** A rule is already written down, but Claude keeps breaking it and you find out only later.

**The outcome:** Claude gets a one-line nudge right away, and ctx-handoff drafts guards that apply only after you say yes.

### Steps

1. Run `claude plugin install ctx-handoff@ctx-handoff-mod` if it is not installed yet
2. Start a new conversation and let Claude raise any drafted guard
3. Open `/handoff panel` to see the guards waiting for approval
4. Answer yes to the guards you want applied and no to the rest
5. Confirm in the panel that the approved guards are listed as active

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
With ctx-handoff-mod installed in Claude Code, open `/handoff panel` for <project path> and review any drafted guards. Expected output: a list of guards with approve or decline choices. Verify that nothing is applied until you approve it.
```

### Caveat

The README describes guards as checks on tool calls, so only approve a guard after you have read what it blocks or reminds about.
