# AI use cases for NPC Talk (christos-antono/NPCTalk)

Repo: [christos-antono/NPCTalk](https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/christos-antono-npctalk/

NPCTalk is an open-source toolkit that makes NPCs in games talk back, with cloned Fish Audio voices, a self-hosted voice server, and skills and tools for AI coding agents.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to make an NPC in your own game answer you in character with NPC Talk

Repo: [christos-antono/NPCTalk](https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 4 hours | Basis: From the README

Install the skills, stand up the voice server and get one NPC replying in a cloned voice.

**Who it is for:** A solo modder with a single-player game they own, who wants one NPC to answer typed or spoken questions with a voice.

**The problem:** Wiring an LLM, a text-to-speech server and game hooks together by hand takes many separate setups that are easy to get wrong.

**The outcome:** One NPC in the game replies to the player in character, in a cloned voice, roughly a second after the player speaks.

### Steps

1. Install the skills and CLI in your agent: `uv tool install git+https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk` (or clone the repo and start your agent inside it).
2. Set up Modal with `modal setup`, then put the value of NPCVOICE_TOKEN into the npcvoice-auth secret.
3. Check that the voice server is up with `npctalk health`, then speak a test line with `npctalk say`.
4. Ask the make-npcs-talk skill to build the four game hooks (who is talked to, scene facts, voice at the NPC, actions) for one NPC only.
5. Test in the game, and log each step's timing as the skill's verification step asks.

```text
Using the NPCTalk repo at https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk, start the make-npcs-talk skill and make the NPC <npc-name> in <game-name> answer typed questions in a voice. Expected output: a working speak loop and a WAV from `npctalk say`. Verify that `npctalk health` reports the voice server up before testing the game.
```

### Caveat

The README says the voice server URL should stay private because its /health endpoint wakes the GPU, so keep it out of commits and shared logs.

Risk, credentials: Modal, fal, Cerebras and TypeSafe keys must come from environment variables, never from files in the repo.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.

## How to clone a character voice from recordings you have rights to with NPC Talk

Repo: [christos-antono/NPCTalk](https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 2 hours | Basis: From the README

Turn your own recording into reference clips, upload them and measure how close the voice sounds.

**Who it is for:** A modder making a character who needs a consistent cloned voice, using audio they have the rights to.

**The problem:** A cloned voice can sound thin or off, and it is hard to tell whether the reference clip or the model is at fault.

**The outcome:** A voice folder with reference clips and mood clips on the server, and a likeness measurement that shows whether a setting helped.

### Steps

1. Confirm you have the rights to the recording you plan to clone from.
2. Make the reference set from your recording with `npctalk voice make`.
3. Send the voice folder to the server with `npctalk voice upload`.
4. Speak a test line in that voice with `npctalk say` and listen to the WAV.
5. Run `npctalk check` before you share anything, so no voice clips or keys go out with the repo.

```text
In the NPCTalk repo at https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk, use the voice-references and voice-likeness-eval skills to build a voice from <recording-path> that you have rights to. Expected output: a voices/<name> folder uploaded to the server and a WAV from `npctalk say`. Verify with `npctalk check` that no audio, transcripts or keys are staged for commit.
```

### Caveat

The README's measured likeness numbers come from one character and ten test lines, so expect different results with your own voice and clips.

Risk, voice cloning: Cloning a real person's voice without their consent or the rights to the recording is what this use case must avoid, and the README says voice clips must never be committed or published.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.

## How to record short gameplay clips of NPCs talking to each other with NPC Talk

Repo: [christos-antono/NPCTalk](https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 2 hours | Basis: From the README

Produce 5 to 10 second conversation clips with a fixed gameplay camera and lines rendered first.

**Who it is for:** A modder preparing a showcase video of their NPC mod for a community post or a game dev channel.

**The problem:** Showcase footage of a talking NPC is hard to make look like normal gameplay and to sync with rendered lines.

**The outcome:** Short gameplay-style clips of an NPC conversation, ready to share, with lines rendered before filming.

### Steps

1. Install the skills with `npx skills add https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk` if you are not using a plugin install.
2. Ask the npc-showcase-clips skill to plan the scene, with a fixed gameplay camera and lines rendered first.
3. Render the lines with `npctalk say`, then check the timings.
4. Record the clip in the game, sync the audio, and cut it to 5 to 10 seconds.
5. Run `npctalk check` before publishing the clip folder so no game audio or transcripts leak.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the NPCTalk repo at https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk, run the npc-showcase-clips skill to plan a 5 to 10 second conversation between <npc-a> and <npc-b> in <game-name>. Expected output: a planned shot list and rendered line WAVs with timings. Verify that the clip stays within 5 to 10 seconds and that `npctalk check` passes before anything is shared.
```

### Caveat

The README says the showcase clips must not include game audio or a game's dialogue when published, so keep recordings private unless you have rights to share them.

Risk, reverse engineering: Clips of a game can contain copyrighted game audio and dialogue, which the README says must never be published.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.
