## How to compare products for a shopping brief with Northcinder

Repo: [cinderline/northcinder](https://github.com/cinderline/northcinder) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Get ranked product choices with reasons, rejected offers, and sources from your AI app.

**Who it is for:** A shopper with a specific need, such as black wool running shoes under $130, who wants a comparison instead of a single marketplace's picks.

**The problem:** Marketplace shopping agents search one catalog and steer toward that platform's checkout, so the buyer cannot see independent options or why items ranked as they did.

**The outcome:** A short list of up to three useful choices, each with an explanation of its rank, the other finalists, rejected offers, and facts that could not be verified.

### Steps

1. Run `npx northcinder init` to save your configuration and print the MCP entry for your AI app.
2. Add the printed MCP entry to your MCP-capable AI app and restart it.
3. Send a shopping brief such as: Find black wool running shoes under $130. Compare price, delivery, fit, and merchant trust. Tell me why the winner ranked first and which options were ruled out.
4. Read why the top choice ranked first, then check the finalists, rejected offers, and unverified facts.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the NorthCinder MCP server to search for <product request> and compare price, delivery, fit, and merchant trust. Return up to three ranked choices with the reason for each rank, the rejected offers, and any facts that could not be verified. Verify that each choice lists the store it came from and that no purchase was started.
```

### Caveat

NorthCinder's checks cover the offers it received from configured stores, not the completeness or truth of any store's catalog, and stores that were unavailable or not configured are reported rather than covered.

## How to vet a seller before buying with Northcinder

Repo: [cinderline/northcinder](https://github.com/cinderline/northcinder) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run NorthCinder's seller research guide to check identity, sources, and unknowns.

**Who it is for:** A buyer who is about to purchase from an unfamiliar merchant and wants to know whether the seller is who they claim to be and how trustworthy the seller's history looks.

**The problem:** Polished seller pages and copied listings can hide who actually sells an item, and unknown seller history is easy to mistake for a safe record.

**The outcome:** A research checklist followed for the exact seller, with conflicts and unknowns listed, and a result that stays provisional until you check it yourself.

### Steps

1. Run `npx northcinder init` if you have not already set up NorthCinder in your AI app.
2. Ask your AI app to read the resource `northcinder://research/seller`.
3. Ask the app to call `create_research_plan` with your actual request and the exact seller name.
4. Have the app follow the returned checklist using the research tools it already controls.
5. Review the sources, conflicts, and unknowns yourself before deciding whether to buy.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the NorthCinder MCP server, read northcinder://research/seller, then call create_research_plan for the seller <seller name> and the request <request>. Return the checklist results, source conflicts, and unknown seller history, and mark the result as provisional. Verify that the seller identity matches the exact merchant named before treating any finding as usable.
```

### Caveat

The README says no host and model combination is currently qualified for routine research use, so every seller research result must be checked by the buyer before relying on it.

## How to approve one exact purchase at a set cap with Northcinder

Repo: [cinderline/northcinder](https://github.com/cinderline/northcinder) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Buy a single chosen offer through a one-time signed approval or finish in your browser.

**Who it is for:** A buyer who has picked a specific offer and wants an AI app to complete the purchase only within limits they set.

**The problem:** Letting an agent buy freely risks buying the wrong variant, paying more than expected, or repeating a purchase.

**The outcome:** A signed approval for one exact offer and one unit, with the merchant, variant, price, known total, and spending cap, used once, plus a local record of the checkout attempt.

### Steps

1. Run `npx northcinder init` and connect NorthCinder to your AI app.
2. Confirm the exact offer you want, including merchant, variant, price, and known total.
3. Approve that single offer and unit with a spending cap, since each checkout needs a fresh approval.
4. If the store supports automated checkout, let the app use the opaque payment token. Otherwise, use the cart link NorthCinder gives you and finish in your own browser.
5. Check the local audit log entry for the checkout attempt and the order outcome.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the NorthCinder MCP server, prepare checkout for the offer <offer id> with a spending cap of <amount>, one unit only. Return the approval details, the checkout result or cart link, and the audit log entry. Verify that the merchant, variant, price, and total match the approval before any payment step runs.
```

### Caveat

A supported automated checkout is only available for stores with a native connection that confirms the exact offer, so other stores require the buyer to finish the purchase in their own browser.

Risk, credentials: Checkout uses an opaque payment token or a cart link, and NorthCinder rejects raw card details, but the buyer must still protect the store credentials and payment access they hold.
