## How to try AI citation monitoring with safe mock data with Cited

Repo: [cited-cc/cited](https://github.com/cited-cc/cited) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Self-host Cited and run a first scan on fictional data before connecting any live provider.

**Who it is for:** A marketing lead or developer evaluating whether citation monitoring fits their workflow, with no provider account yet.

**The problem:** It is hard to judge an AI citation tool before seeing how prompts, scans, and evidence look in practice, and live providers need paid credentials.

**The outcome:** A running local Cited instance with an owner account and one monitored prompt producing scan results in mock mode.

### Steps

1. Run `npm ci`
2. Run `npm run self-host:up`
3. Run `npm run self-host:token` and copy the bootstrap token
4. Open http://localhost:3000/setup, create the first owner, then sign in at /sign-in
5. Follow the first monitor tutorial at docs/getting-started/first-monitor.md to add the fictional domain cited-test.example, a competitor, and prompts in mock mode

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the cited-cc/cited repo, follow the Quickstart and first monitor tutorial to self-host Cited in mock mode and add the fictional domain cited-test.example with one prompt. Report the local URL and the scan result, and confirm each mock result is labeled [MOCK].
```

### Caveat

Mock mode uses fictional data and makes no external provider calls, so it shows the workflow but not real AI answers about your brand.

## How to monitor live brand citations with your DataForSEO account with Cited

Repo: [cited-cc/cited](https://github.com/cited-cc/cited) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Connect your own DataForSEO credentials so Cited scans supported AI surfaces for real answers.

**Who it is for:** An SEO or marketing operator who already has a DataForSEO account and needs live evidence of how AI assistants cite the brand.

**The problem:** Mock data cannot show what AI assistants actually say about the brand, and the operator must supply their own provider credentials.

**The outcome:** Cited running in live mode through the DataForSEO adapter, with scan runs recording citations and mentions for configured prompts.

### Steps

1. Obtain DataForSEO API credentials
2. Configure the provider and credentials in .cited/config.env following docs/providers/dataforseo.md
3. Run `npm run self-host:down && npm run self-host:up`
4. Run `npm run self-host:doctor` to check the installation
5. Verify your domain, configure your brand, and add monitored prompts and surfaces in the web app

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the cited-cc/cited repo, configure DataForSEO credentials in .cited/config.env using docs/providers/dataforseo.md, restart with the self-host commands, and run self-host:doctor. Report which surfaces are available for the configured provider and whether the doctor check passed. Verify that no credential values are printed in the output.
```

### Caveat

Surface availability depends on the selected provider, and DataForSEO requires operator-supplied credentials, so not every surface will return results.

Risk, credentials: DataForSEO credentials are stored in .cited/config.env, so keep that file private and never paste the keys into shared logs or prompts.

## How to find competitor appearances and missed citation opportunities with Cited

Repo: [cited-cc/cited](https://github.com/cited-cc/cited) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Track competitor domains in AI answers and surface prompts where your brand is absent.

**Who it is for:** A content or competitive marketing manager who wants to know which rival brands AI assistants recommend and where the brand is missing.

**The problem:** Teams guess which prompts they are losing to competitors, so they miss chances to earn citations.

**The outcome:** A review queue in the inbox and notebook showing competitor events and missed-opportunity prompts with stored response snapshots.

### Steps

1. Run `npm run self-host:up` and sign in after creating the owner at /setup
2. Add your brand domain, then add competitors in the web app
3. Add the prompts that matter and choose the AI surfaces to scan
4. Wait for the worker to run scans, then open the inbox to review competitor appearances and missed opportunities
5. Save findings to the notebook and use the evidence ledger exports for reporting

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the cited-cc/cited repo, after self-hosting, add <your-brand-domain> as the brand, add <competitor-domain> as a competitor, and add the prompts listed in <prompt-file>. Report the competitor events and missed-opportunity items found in the inbox. Verify that each item links to a stored response snapshot.
```

### Caveat

Results depend on the prompts you configure and the provider you select, and Cited does not monitor every AI answer everywhere.

## How to self-host a citation evidence workspace for your team with Cited

Repo: [cited-cc/cited](https://github.com/cited-cc/cited) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run Cited on your own Docker host to keep AI citation evidence and notes in one workspace.

**Who it is for:** A developer or IT owner at a marketing team that wants citation evidence kept on infrastructure it controls.

**The problem:** Marketing teams need evidence of AI citations for stakeholders, and they want that record hosted and governed in-house.

**The outcome:** A self-hosted Cited instance with an owner account, a health check, and a documented path for exports and notifications.

### Steps

1. Run `npm ci`
2. Run `npm run self-host:up`
3. Run `npm run self-host:token`, then open /setup to create the first owner
4. Run `npm run self-host:doctor` to confirm the installation is healthy
5. Read docs/security/ before inviting others, then stop safely with `npm run self-host:down` when not in use

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the cited-cc/cited repo, self-host Cited with Docker Compose, run the doctor command, and report the health output and the default URL. Verify that the secrets directory .cited/secrets/ exists and that no secret values were printed to the output.
```

### Caveat

The README says Cited is not claimed to be penetration-tested or certified for regulated compliance frameworks, so review the security guides before using it for sensitive data.
