# AI use cases for Omni Route (diegosouzapw/OmniRoute)

Repo: [diegosouzapw/OmniRoute](https://github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/diegosouzapw-omniroute/

OmniRoute is a free, MIT-licensed AI gateway that gives you one endpoint for many AI providers and models, with quota-aware fallback between them.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to keep coding when one provider's quota runs out with Omni Route

Repo: [diegosouzapw/OmniRoute](https://github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Route Claude Code, Codex or Cursor through one gateway that falls back to the next healthy model.

**Who it is for:** A developer using an AI coding agent daily who hits rate limits or runs out of a provider's free or subscription quota mid-task.

**The problem:** Each provider has its own limits and SDK. When one quota runs out, the coding session stops until the developer changes settings by hand.

**The outcome:** The coding agent keeps sending requests to one local endpoint, and Omni Route moves to the next eligible model when quota or health changes.

### Steps

1. Install Omni Route with npm (`npm install -g omniroute`) or run the Docker image `diegosouzapw/omniroute`. (inferred, check the README)
2. Open the local dashboard, connect at least one provider, and note that some free tiers need credentials first.
3. Copy your Omni Route key from Dashboard → Endpoints.
4. In your coding agent, set the OpenAI-compatible base URL to http://localhost:20128/v1 and the API key to your Omni Route key. (inferred, check the README)
5. Set the model to `auto` for the balanced default, or `auto/subscription` to use only quota you already pay for.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the diegosouzapw/OmniRoute repo, configure <agent> to send chat requests to http://localhost:20128/v1 with model auto/thrifty. Run one test request with curl and report the completion text it returns. Verify that the request succeeds with the OmniRoute key and no provider error is returned.
```

### Caveat

The auto model needs an eligible route, and a fresh installation can have no eligible keyless targets, so connect a provider first.

Risk, account pooling: Each provider sets its own limits and terms, and spreading requests across several accounts may breach them; providers marked tos: avoid, including Kiro, are excluded from automatic routing by default.

Risk, credentials: Provider API keys and the Omni Route key grant access to paid or free accounts, so store them securely and do not share them.

## How to send one API call to many models from a script with Omni Route

Repo: [diegosouzapw/OmniRoute](https://github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Point any OpenAI-style client at one local endpoint and switch models without changing code.

**Who it is for:** A developer or analyst writing a script or small app that calls AI models and wants to test several providers without rewriting the client.

**The problem:** Every provider has a different SDK, base URL and key handling, so trying a new model means new integration work.

**The outcome:** A single chat completion request to localhost returns a model answer, and the model can be changed in one field.

### Steps

1. Install Omni Route with npm (`npm install -g omniroute`) or pull the Docker image `diegosouzapw/omniroute`. (inferred, check the README)
2. Connect a provider in the dashboard and copy your Omni Route key from Dashboard → Endpoints.
3. Run the test request: `curl http://localhost:20128/v1/chat/completions -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_OMNIROUTE_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"model":"auto","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Hello!"}]}'` (inferred, check the README)
4. Open examples/quickstart/ in the repo and pick the Python or Node.js script for your project.
5. Replace the model value with a specific model ID from your connected providers when you want a fixed model.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the diegosouzapw/OmniRoute repo, write a script that sends the prompt <prompt> to http://localhost:20128/v1/chat/completions with model auto and prints the reply. Run it and report the reply text. Verify that the HTTP status is 200 and the reply is non-empty.
```

### Caveat

The README says a fresh installation can have no eligible keyless targets, so the first request may fail until a provider is connected.

Risk, credentials: The script needs your Omni Route key, so keep it in an environment variable and out of shared code.

## How to compare free-tier capacity before choosing providers with Omni Route

Repo: [diegosouzapw/OmniRoute](https://github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Check the dashboard's free-tier catalog to see how much usable free capacity you have.

**Who it is for:** A solo builder or student deciding which AI providers to sign up for without paying for a subscription.

**The problem:** Free tiers are spread across many SDKs, rate limits and terms, and it is hard to tell how much usable capacity they add up to.

**The outcome:** The user sees the free-tier entries and monthly figures Omni Route computes, then chooses which providers to connect.

### Steps

1. Read the free-tier methodology in docs/reference/FREE_TIERS.md and the Free Tiers Guide at docs/getting-started/FREE-TIERS-GUIDE.md.
2. Install Omni Route and open the dashboard at /dashboard/free-tiers.
3. Check each provider's own terms, since the README says each provider controls its limits, availability and terms.
4. Connect the providers you can use and note any that need a regional identity check.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the diegosouzapw/OmniRoute repo, read docs/reference/FREE_TIERS.md and list the free-tier pools it describes for <provider or pool>. Report the monthly budget figures it gives. Verify that you cite the document and do not add figures it does not state.
```

### Caveat

The README says the token totals are estimates across third-party free tiers, not a grant from Omni Route, and they change when providers change their terms.
