# AI use cases for Ponytail (DietrichGebert/ponytail)

Repo: [DietrichGebert/ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/dietrichgebert-ponytail/

Ponytail is a prompt and skill set that makes AI coding agents write less code and review changes for bugs, security, and missing tests.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to review agent-written changes before merging with Ponytail

Repo: [DietrichGebert/ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run a senior-dev style review on uncommitted changes and see bugs, risks and cuts.

**Who it is for:** A developer who just had an AI agent write a feature and wants a second look before committing.

**The problem:** Agent-written code often adds more code than the task needs, and bugs or missing tests are easy to miss in the diff.

**The outcome:** A list of findings, each saying what the code does, what goes wrong, how to fix it, and what happens if it is not fixed.

### Steps

1. Run `/plugin marketplace add DietrichGebert/ponytail` in Claude Code.
2. Run `/plugin install ponytail@ponytail` in Claude Code.
3. Let the agent make your change in the repo.
4. Run `/ponytail-review uncommitted` to review the current uncommitted changes. (inferred, check the README)
5. Read each finding and fix the ones that matter before committing.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repo <repo-path> (DietrichGebert/ponytail skill installed), run /ponytail-review uncommitted on the current changes. Expected output: a list of findings with what the code does, what goes wrong, how to fix it, and the cost of not fixing it. Verify that each finding points to a file touched by the uncommitted diff.
```

### Caveat

The README says the review is meant to catch bugs and missing tests, but it does not promise it will find every problem, so keep your own tests and checks.

## How to rank fixes across a whole repo with Ponytail

Repo: [DietrichGebert/ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Map a codebase's entry points and data flow, then get a ranked fix list.

**Who it is for:** An engineer taking over an unfamiliar codebase who needs to know what to fix first.

**The problem:** A new codebase has many possible issues and no clear order for fixing them.

**The outcome:** A ranked list of findings for the whole repo, with the code map and the top fixes first.

### Steps

1. Run `/plugin marketplace add DietrichGebert/ponytail` in Claude Code.
2. Run `/plugin install ponytail@ponytail` in Claude Code.
3. Open the repo you want to check in Claude Code.
4. Run `/ponytail-audit` from the repo root.
5. Work through the ranked list from the top, starting with the first fix it recommends.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repo <repo-path> (DietrichGebert/ponytail skill installed), run /ponytail-audit. Expected output: a short map of entry points and data flow, then a ranked list of findings with the first fix to make. Verify that the top-ranked item names a real file in the repo.
```

### Caveat

The audit covers the whole repo in one pass, so its ranking is a starting point for your own judgment rather than a complete security or load review.

## How to track deferred shortcuts in a debt ledger with Ponytail

Repo: [DietrichGebert/ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Collect shortcut comments the agent left behind into one ledger so they get revisited.

**Who it is for:** A tech lead who wants deliberate shortcuts from AI-written code tracked instead of forgotten.

**The problem:** Shortcuts written as comments get lost, so a temporary fix can quietly become permanent.

**The outcome:** A ledger of all deferred shortcut comments, with the context for when to revisit each one.

### Steps

1. Run `/plugin marketplace add DietrichGebert/ponytail` in Claude Code.
2. Run `/plugin install ponytail@ponytail` in Claude Code.
3. Let the agent work in the repo so it writes `shortcut:` comments where it chose a deliberate shortcut.
4. Run `/ponytail-debt` from the repo root.
5. Review the ledger and schedule the items you want to revisit.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repo <repo-path> (DietrichGebert/ponytail skill installed), run /ponytail-debt. Expected output: a ledger listing each shortcut: comment with its file and the reason to revisit it. Verify that every listed item matches a shortcut: comment that exists in the repo.
```

### Caveat

The ledger only collects comments in the shortcut: form, so it will miss shortcuts that were not written that way.

## How to add Ponytail rules to any coding agent with Ponytail

Repo: [DietrichGebert/ponytail](https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Copy the compact AGENTS.md rules file into a project so a non-Claude agent follows them.

**Who it is for:** A developer using an agent other than Claude Code or Codex who wants the same lean coding rules.

**The problem:** Each agent reads project rules differently, and most agents have no plugin to install.

**The outcome:** A project where the agent reads the Ponytail rules on every session, without the review or audit commands.

### Steps

1. Open the Ponytail repo at https://github.com/DietrichGebert/ponytail.
2. Copy `AGENTS.md` into the root of your project.
3. Start a new session with your agent in that project.
4. Check the agent's first reply for the rules taking effect.
5. Read INSTALL.md in the repo if your agent needs a different install path.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Copy AGENTS.md from DietrichGebert/ponytail into the root of <project-path>, then start a session and ask the agent to add a small helper function. Expected output: a short helper that follows the Ponytail rules. Verify that the agent did not add extra abstraction or unused code.
```

### Caveat

Without a skill-capable host, the README says the commands are not available, so you only get the always-on rules.
