md2hd is a JavaScript CLI that turns a markdown file or folder of notes into an interactive relationship map that opens in your browser.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to map a folder of notes into a browsable graph with Md2 HD

Repo: [evan-steinhilb/md2hd](https://github.com/evan-steinhilb/md2hd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Point Md2 HD at a notes folder and open the map in your browser within minutes.

**Who it is for:** A researcher or analyst with a folder of markdown notes on people, organisations, or threads who needs to see how they fit together.

**The problem:** The notes hold the facts, but the connections between them only live in the author's head.

**The outcome:** A local map in the browser where frontmatter entries appear as nodes and wikilinks appear as edges.

### Steps

1. Install Node.js and open a terminal in the folder that holds your notes.
2. Run `npx md2hd notes/` to map the whole folder, or `npx md2hd map.md` for a single file.
3. Wait for the browser tab to open and look at the Overview surface at the foot of the canvas.
4. Save a markdown file and refresh the tab to confirm the map re-reads from disk.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the md2hd repo at evan-steinhilb/md2hd. Run `npx md2hd <placeholder>` on the notes folder I name, then report the number of nodes you can see in the Overview. Verify the map opened in the browser on 127.0.0.1 before you report back.
```

### Caveat

Md2 HD only draws nodes from frontmatter blocks and wikilinks, so notes without that structure will show as prose and not as a map.

## How to have a coding agent turn existing notes into a map with Md2 HD

Repo: [evan-steinhilb/md2hd](https://github.com/evan-steinhilb/md2hd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Load the bundled skill so an agent writes markdown that compiles to the map you meant.

**Who it is for:** A knowledge worker with a pile of existing notes who wants an agent to restructure them into an Md2 HD map without learning the syntax first.

**The problem:** Writing node frontmatter and rel: edges by hand is tedious, and a map can parse cleanly yet draw the wrong graph.

**The outcome:** Markdown files that open as the map you asked for, plus a diagnosis of any missing nodes, reversed arrows, or placeholder nodes.

### Steps

1. Run `npx skills add evan-steinhilb/md2hd` to load the writing-md2hd-maps skill into your agent.
2. In Claude Code, you can instead run `/plugin marketplace add evan-steinhilb/md2hd` and then `/plugin install md2hd@md2hd`.
3. Ask the agent to convert your notes folder into an Md2 HD map, naming the folder.
4. Run `npx md2hd notes/` on the output and check the Overview for missing nodes or reversed arrows.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the md2hd repo at evan-steinhilb/md2hd and its writing-md2hd-maps skill, convert the notes in <placeholder> into md2hd markdown with a type: map block. Expected output: the edited markdown files. Verify by running `npx md2hd <placeholder>` and confirming every intended node appears on the canvas.
```

### Caveat

The skill helps an agent write the syntax, but you still need to check the rendered map because the README notes that a clean parse can still draw the wrong thing.

## How to trace who connects to a node and how far out it reaches with Md2 HD

Repo: [evan-steinhilb/md2hd](https://github.com/evan-steinhilb/md2hd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Focus a single node and use the degree dial to walk its links in each direction.

**Who it is for:** An analyst or project lead who needs to know which people or organisations sit around one key contact.

**The problem:** A flat list of notes hides how one entity links to others two or three steps away.

**The outcome:** A focused view where inbound links appear on the left, outbound links on the right, and the degree dial shows wider rings.

### Steps

1. Run `npx md2hd map.md` on the file that holds your mapped notes.
2. Click the node you care about so the map re-forms around it.
3. Use the 1st / 2nd / 3rd / X degree dial on a connection column to walk further out.
4. Hover a row in a type's list to light its card on the canvas.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the md2hd repo at evan-steinhilb/md2hd, open the map for <placeholder> and focus the node named <placeholder>. Report the nodes reachable at 2nd degree on the To side. Verify the degree dial changes the rings before you answer.
```

### Caveat

The focus and degree views depend on the edges in your markdown, so any missing rel: entry or wikilink will be missing from the traced path.

## How to draw an org chart or service map with your own types with Md2 HD

Repo: [evan-steinhilb/md2hd](https://github.com/evan-steinhilb/md2hd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Define types and an inverse block in your own files to color and lay out a custom map.

**Who it is for:** A team lead or operations owner who wants an org chart or service dependency map built from notes they already keep.

**The problem:** Generic diagram tools need separate data entry, and the notes describing the structure drift out of date.

**The outcome:** A map of your chosen types, with each relationship reading in the voice of its node, such as employs and works at.

### Steps

1. Add a `type: map` block at the top of a markdown file, with a title and an inverse entry for each relationship pair.
2. Give each node a frontmatter block with an id, a type, a title, and a rel: list.
3. Run `npx md2hd notes/` to open the map in the browser.
4. Click the Code toggle in a node's pane and edit the source file to watch the map redraw.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the md2hd repo at evan-steinhilb/md2hd, write a type: map block and node frontmatter for the org chart described in <placeholder>. Expected output: markdown files with an inverse entry such as works_at: employs. Verify by running `npx md2hd <placeholder>` and checking that the relationship labels read correctly on both nodes.
```

### Caveat

Md2 HD reads your own type names and labels from the files, so the map is only as clear as the types and inverse pairs you write.
