Repo: [Freaction/Aquilum](https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/freaction-aquilum/

Aquilum is a native, local-first Markdown knowledge base app for Windows, macOS and Linux that works directly on a folder of .md files.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to build a private research vault on Windows with Aquilum

Repo: [Freaction/Aquilum](https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install Aquilum and link notes into a graph you keep as plain .md files on your own disk.

**Who it is for:** A researcher or student on Windows who wants a notes workspace with no account and no cloud database, starting with a fresh folder of notes.

**The problem:** Notes spread across apps and cloud services, and links between ideas get lost when they are not kept in one place you own.

**The outcome:** A vault folder of ordinary Markdown files, with wiki links you can browse as a graph and see as backlinks.

### Steps

1. Open the latest release page at https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum/releases/latest and download Aquilum_ _x64-setup.exe.
2. Run the installer and choose a new folder for your vault. The app installs for the current user and does not need administrator rights.
3. If SmartScreen warns about the unsigned installer, choose More info, then Run anyway, as the README describes.
4. Create two or three notes and connect them with wiki links.
5. Open the graph view to see the links, and check the backlinks panel below a note to confirm the connections.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Aquilum repo at https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum, explain the steps to create a vault folder at <vault-path> with two linked notes. Output the list of .md files created in that folder. Verify that each note is a plain Markdown file on disk.
```

### Caveat

The Windows installer is not currently signed with a code-signing certificate, so SmartScreen may block it until you choose Run anyway.

## How to let an AI agent edit notes through local MCP with Aquilum

Repo: [Freaction/Aquilum](https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Connect a compatible AI tool to Aquilum's optional local MCP server to search and edit your notes.

**Who it is for:** A knowledge worker who already uses an AI tool and wants it to read, search and precisely edit notes in one vault without copying text by hand.

**The problem:** Copying notes into an AI chat and pasting results back is slow, and the edits are hard to track or undo.

**The outcome:** An agent that searches your vault, reads matching notes, and makes targeted edits that you can review in note history.

### Steps

1. Install Aquilum and open your vault, as in the Windows installation steps.
2. Turn on the optional local MCP server that Aquilum exposes.
3. Connect a compatible AI tool to that local server.
4. Ask the agent to search a topic in the vault and summarize the matching notes.
5. Open the note history panel and check each change the agent made before you keep it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Aquilum MCP server for the vault at <vault-path>, search for notes about <topic>, read the top three matches, and add one short summary section to a note named <note-name>. Report which note changed and the exact text added. Verify the change in the note history panel and in the .md file on disk.
```

### Caveat

The README says the MCP server is optional but does not describe how to turn it on, so check the app's settings for that step.

Risk, credentials: The MCP server gives a connected AI tool read and write access to your vault, so only connect tools you trust to your notes.

## How to build a live task dashboard as your vault home with Aquilum

Repo: [Freaction/Aquilum](https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Set a home note that rolls up open tasks from many notes with live TASK and TABLE queries.

**Who it is for:** A project manager or solo worker who keeps tasks inside project notes and wants one page that shows what is still open.

**The problem:** Tasks sit in many project notes, so no single page shows what is open across the whole vault.

**The outcome:** A home-page note with a live TASK query that lists matching checkboxes from across the vault, where completing an item updates the source note.

### Steps

1. Create a new note and name it for your dashboard, such as Home.
2. Add a TASK query block that matches the status or area metadata you use in project notes.
3. Add a TABLE query block to list project notes by a frontmatter field, such as status.
4. Choose the note as the vault home page in the app's settings.
5. Complete one task inside the query result and open its source note to confirm the checkbox changed there.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Aquilum vault at <vault-path>, create a home note named Dashboard.md with one live TASK query and one TABLE query that filters on a frontmatter field named <field-name>. Output the full Markdown of the note. Verify by completing one task from the query and confirming the source note file changed.
```

### Caveat

The README describes TASK, LIST and TABLE queries but does not list their exact query syntax, so copy the syntax from the app's own examples.

## How to collect book quotes into linked research notes with Aquilum

Repo: [Freaction/Aquilum](https://github.com/Freaction/Aquilum) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Read an EPUB or other book in the vault and save passages as quotes you can link and search.

**Who it is for:** A student or reader who studies long-form books and wants key passages filed next to their own ideas and projects.

**The problem:** Highlights live in a reading app and are hard to connect to the notes where the ideas are developed.

**The outcome:** Saved book quotes in the book note, linked to project notes and found through vault search.

### Steps

1. Add an EPUB, MOBI, AZW3 or FB2 file to the vault so it appears in the book library.
2. Open the book from the library, which resumes your saved reading position.
3. Select a passage in the reader and save it as a quote in the book note.
4. Add a link from the quote to a project or idea note.
5. Search the vault for a phrase from the quote to confirm it is indexed.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Aquilum vault at <vault-path>, find the book note for <book-title> and list every saved quote with its linked note. Output a Markdown list of quote text and link targets. Verify that the quotes appear in the book note file on disk.
```

### Caveat

The README says the original book files stay in the vault, but it does not say how a quote is stored in the book note, so check the saved output before you rely on it.
