## How to have AI revise a Word file and review every change with Genoffice

Repo: [genspark-ai/genoffice](https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Open a .docx in GenOffice Docs, ask the AI for an edit, and accept or roll back the tracked changes.

**Who it is for:** A writer, analyst or manager who has a Word document to update and wants AI help without losing control of the original file.

**The problem:** Asking a chatbot to rewrite a document means copying text back and forth, and the original formatting often breaks.

**The outcome:** The Word file is revised in place, the edits appear as tracked changes, and the file still opens in Word.

### Steps

1. Download GenOffice for your system from the releases page and install it.
2. Open your .docx file in the Docs editor, or open it from the home screen.
3. Turn on Track changes if you want edits shown as Word-style revisions.
4. Ask the AI panel for the change, for example to rewrite a section or add a bulleted part.
5. Review each AI turn, then keep the result or roll back to the snapshot taken before that turn.
6. Save the file and open it in Word to confirm the formatting and revisions read correctly.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the GenOffice app on this machine, open <path to .docx> in the Docs editor, ask the AI to tighten the Overview section, and keep edits as tracked changes. Expected output: the saved .docx with revisions visible. Verify that the file opens in Word with the original styles and comments intact.
```

### Caveat

Only the AI calls leave the machine, to the provider you choose, so the content you send to the AI is shared with that provider.

Risk, credentials: If you bring your own key, store it only in GenOffice settings and never paste it into a shared document or chat.

## How to let a coding agent build decks and workbooks locally with Genoffice

Repo: [genspark-ai/genoffice](https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the Genoffice skill so Claude Code, Codex or Cursor can create .pptx and .xlsx files on your machine.

**Who it is for:** A developer or analyst who already works in a coding agent and wants it to produce real Office files from a prompt.

**The problem:** Coding agents can write text, but producing a finished .pptx or .xlsx file that opens cleanly in Office usually takes manual work.

**The outcome:** The agent creates, converts or edits real Office files on your machine and returns them for review, without opening a window.

### Steps

1. Run `npx skills add genspark-ai/genoffice` to install the skill, or open GenOffice Settings → Integrations and install it into the agents it finds.
2. Start your coding agent in a project folder where the output should go.
3. Ask the agent for a specific file, for example a short eight-slide deck on a topic you choose.
4. Let the agent use `genoffice` commands to check and assemble the file, then review the rendered output it returns.
5. Open the saved .pptx or .xlsx in Office or GenOffice and check the content and layout.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install the genoffice skill from the genspark-ai/genoffice repo, then build an eight-slide deck about <topic> in <output folder> as a .pptx file. Expected output: one .pptx file and a rendered preview of each slide. Verify that the deck opens and that no slide text overflows or overlaps.
```

### Caveat

Image generation and any other AI-backed steps send content to the AI provider you configured, so check that provider before running the agent on private material.

## How to find the office file that answers your question with Genoffice

Repo: [genspark-ai/genoffice](https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Search your work folder by names, folders and full text, with optional Jev reranking of the top hits.

**Who it is for:** Someone whose work folder holds hundreds of documents and who needs the one file that states a specific policy or number.

**The problem:** Plain keyword search returns files that share words with the question but do not answer it.

**The outcome:** The home screen lists the files that best answer the question first, and you open the right document in seconds.

### Steps

1. Open GenOffice and point the work folder at the folder that holds your files.
2. Type your question into the home screen search box and read the list of local hits.
3. Go to Settings → AI Media & Search → Local file search and turn on Jev search reranking if you want the top 20 hits reordered by the model.
4. Pick OpenRouter or TypeSafe direct, paste your key, and select Test connection.
5. Open the top file and confirm that it answers your question.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the GenOffice app, search the work folder <folder path> for documents that answer '<question>' and turn on Jev reranking if a key is set. Expected output: the top five files in order. Verify that the first file contains the answer by opening it.
```

### Caveat

The index stays on the device, but when Jev reranking is on, excerpts of the top 20 hits are sent to the reranking service you chose.

Risk, credentials: The Jev reranking key is stored in GenOffice settings, so keep that machine and its settings file under your control.

## How to ask a question and get answers cited from your files with Genoffice

Repo: [genspark-ai/genoffice](https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Star a set of documents, then use Ask AI on the home screen to get answers with a citation for each claim.

**Who it is for:** A researcher, consultant or student with a set of reports or notes who needs a checked answer across all of them.

**The problem:** Reading a dozen long documents to find one answer is slow, and AI answers without sources are hard to trust.

**The outcome:** You get an answer that cites the file behind each claim, and you can open each citation in the right app to verify it.

### Steps

1. Open GenOffice and star the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Markdown or HTML files you want to use.
2. Go to the home screen and open Ask AI.
3. Type your question in plain language.
4. Read the answer and click each citation to open the source file.
5. Confirm the cited passage supports the claim before you use the answer.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In GenOffice, star the files in <folder> and ask Ask AI: '<question>'. Expected output: an answer where every claim has a file citation. Verify by opening at least two citations and checking that the cited passage supports the claim.
```

### Caveat

Ask AI reads only the starred files and sends the hits and passages it requested to the provider you chose, so check that provider's terms before using confidential documents.

## How to connect Claude Code or Cursor to GenOffice over MCP with Genoffice

Repo: [genspark-ai/genoffice](https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start the Genoffice MCP server so an MCP client can create and edit Office files with no window open.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants an MCP-enabled coding agent to build Office documents as part of a larger automated workflow.

**The problem:** Installing a skill is not always possible in a shared or locked-down setup, and some teams prefer a standard protocol.

**The outcome:** The MCP client lists the GenOffice tools and can create, convert and edit real Office files on your machine.

### Steps

1. Install the GenOffice app and open Settings → Integrations.
2. For Claude Code, copy the `claude mcp add` line shown there and run it in your terminal.
3. For Cursor or Claude Desktop, copy the JSON block into the MCP settings of that client.
4. Start the server with `genoffice mcp` if your client needs it started by hand.
5. Ask the client to list the available tools, then run one small task such as creating a short .docx.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect Claude Code to the GenOffice MCP server using the `claude mcp add` line from Settings → Integrations, then create a one-page .docx named <file name> in <folder>. Expected output: the .docx file and a list of the tools used. Verify that the file opens in Word.
```

### Caveat

The HTTP server for the visible Word editor is a separate option in Settings → Integrations, so turn it on only if you need that visible editor tab.
