# AI use cases for GitHub MCP Server (github/github-mcp-server)

Repo: [github/github-mcp-server](https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/github-github-mcp-server/

The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official server that connects AI tools to GitHub. Agents can browse and search code, manage issues and pull requests, watch GitHub Actions runs and analyze failures, review Dependabot alerts and security findings, and work with discussions and notifications. You can use the remote server hosted by GitHub or run it locally in Docker with a personal access token, and turn toolsets on or off.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to connect your agent to GitHub with the hosted MCP server with GitHub MCP Server

Repo: [github/github-mcp-server](https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 10 minutes | Basis: From the README

Point your MCP host at GitHub's remote server and sign in, with no local install.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants the agent to read repos and manage issues without copy-pasting links.

**The problem:** Agents cannot see issues, PRs or CI unless you paste them in by hand.

**The outcome:** An agent that can query your repos, issues, PRs and workflow runs in natural language.

### Steps

1. Add a server named github of type http with the URL https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ to your host's MCP config
2. Sign in with OAuth, or pass a personal access token in the Authorization header
3. Ask the agent about open issues, recent commits or a PR

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect github/github-mcp-server (remote) to my MCP host, then list the open issues in <owner/repo> labeled bug, grouped by area, with a one-line suggested next step for each.
```

### Caveat

Risk, credentials: A personal access token grants whatever scopes you gave it; use the narrowest scopes and never paste it into a chat.

## How to find out why a GitHub Actions run failed with GitHub MCP Server

Repo: [github/github-mcp-server](https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have the agent pull the failing workflow run and logs and explain the cause.

**Who it is for:** A maintainer staring at a red CI badge with a long log.

**The problem:** Reading CI logs to find the one failing line is slow.

**The outcome:** The failing step, the likely cause and a proposed fix, optionally as a PR.

### Steps

1. Connect the server with the Actions toolset available
2. Ask the agent for the latest failed run on your branch
3. Have it read the logs and point to the failing step
4. Ask it to propose a fix and open a PR for review

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using github/github-mcp-server, find the most recent failed GitHub Actions run on <branch> in <owner/repo>, explain the failing step, and draft a fix as a pull request I can review.
```

## How to run the GitHub MCP server locally in Docker with GitHub MCP Server

Repo: [github/github-mcp-server](https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run GitHub's server on your machine with your own token, for hosts that do not support the remote server.

**Who it is for:** A developer on GitHub Enterprise or a host that needs a local stdio server.

**The problem:** Some setups cannot reach or authenticate to the hosted server.

**The outcome:** A local GitHub MCP server running in Docker with a token from your environment.

### Steps

1. Install Docker and create a personal access token
2. Store it in your shell with `export GITHUB_PAT=your_token_here` and add any .env file to .gitignore
3. For Claude Code: `claude mcp add github -e GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN=$GITHUB_PAT -- docker run -i --rm -e GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server`
4. Restart the host and test a simple query

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Set up github/github-mcp-server locally in Docker for Claude Code using my GITHUB_PAT environment variable, confirm it lists my repos, and tell me which toolsets are on by default.
```

### Caveat

Risk, credentials: Keep the token in the environment and out of committed files; it acts as you on GitHub.
