# AI use cases for Spec Kit (github/spec-kit)

Repo: [github/spec-kit](https://github.com/github/spec-kit) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/github-spec-kit/

Spec Kit is GitHub's open-source toolkit that gives AI coding agents structured processes: Spec-Driven Development (constitution, specify, plan, tasks, implement, converge), a bug fixing extension (assess, fix, test) and an idea assessment extension that ends in a go, clarify or stop decision. You install the specify CLI, pick your coding agent integration, then drive the process with slash commands.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to build a feature from a spec with your coding agent with Spec Kit

Repo: [github/spec-kit](https://github.com/github/spec-kit) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Write principles and a spec first, let the agent plan and break it into tasks, then implement and converge.

**Who it is for:** A developer whose agent writes code fast but drifts from what was actually wanted.

**The problem:** One big prompt produces code that misses requirements and is hard to review.

**The outcome:** A spec, a technical plan, a task list and an implementation checked back against the spec.

### Steps

1. Install the CLI: `uv tool install specify-cli`
2. Create a project: `specify init my-project --integration copilot`
3. Set principles with `/speckit-constitution` and describe the feature with `/speckit-specify`
4. Pick the stack with `/speckit-plan`, then run `/speckit-tasks` and `/speckit-implement`
5. Finish with `/speckit-converge` to check the result against the spec

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Set up github/spec-kit in this repo for <my coding agent>, then run the SDD flow for: <feature>. Stop after /speckit-tasks so I can review the plan and task list before implementation.
```

## How to fix a bug with a recorded cause and verification with Spec Kit

Repo: [github/spec-kit](https://github.com/github/spec-kit) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the bug extension and walk the agent through assess, fix and test for one bug.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants the agent to find the real cause instead of patching symptoms.

**The problem:** Agents often paper over a bug and nobody records why it happened.

**The outcome:** An assessed cause, a scoped fix and a recorded verification for the bug.

### Steps

1. Add the extension: `specify extension add bug`
2. Describe it: `/speckit-bug-assess "Submitting an empty password crashes the login form." slug=login-crash`
3. Apply the fix with `/speckit-bug-fix slug=login-crash`
4. Verify with `/speckit-bug-test slug=login-crash`

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using github/spec-kit's bug extension, assess this bug: <description>, slug=<slug>. Show me the assessed cause before applying the fix, then run the bug test step.
```

## How to decide if an idea is worth building before writing code with Spec Kit

Repo: [github/spec-kit](https://github.com/github/spec-kit) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the assess extension from intake to decide, and get an evidence-backed go, clarify or stop.

**Who it is for:** A founder or tech lead weighing a feature request before spending a sprint on it.

**The problem:** Teams start building ideas that should have been clarified or dropped.

**The outcome:** A written go, clarify or stop decision with the research and shape behind it.

### Steps

1. Add the extension: `specify extension add assess`
2. Start with `/speckit-assess-intake "Let users work offline and sync when they reconnect." slug=offline-mode`
3. Run research, define and shape: `/speckit-assess-research`, `/speckit-assess-define`, `/speckit-assess-shape` with the same slug
4. Close with `/speckit-assess-decide slug=offline-mode`

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Run github/spec-kit's idea assessment for: <idea>, slug=<slug>, through to the decide step, and give me the decision with the three strongest pieces of evidence.
```
