# AI use cases for Ownmem (grpcer/ownmem)

Repo: [grpcer/ownmem](https://github.com/grpcer/ownmem) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/grpcer-ownmem/

OwnMem is an open-source, Git-native project memory layer that stores reviewable Markdown in a repository and gives coding agents deterministic, local recall.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to share one project memory across coding agents with Ownmem

Repo: [grpcer/ownmem](https://github.com/grpcer/ownmem) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install OwnMem in a repo so Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI read the same memory.

**Who it is for:** A developer or team lead whose repository is edited by several AI coding agents and who wants every agent to see the same project lessons.

**The problem:** Each agent starts each session without the lessons the team learned the hard way, so the same mistakes get repeated across tools.

**The outcome:** The repository holds a .ownmem/ directory of Markdown memories, and each named host gets a recall hook or instructions that read from it.

### Steps

1. Run `npm install --save-dev ownmem` inside the repository.
2. Run `npx ownmem init --hook --hosts claude,codex` and read the one-time steps it prints.
3. Reopen each agent, and complete the trust steps that Codex or Grok need if you use them.
4. Commit the new .ownmem/ directory and the host adapter files with the code.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repository grpcer/ownmem, install OwnMem into <target-repo> with the commands in its Quick start, using --hosts for the agents the team uses. Expected output: a .ownmem/ directory and host adapters created, with any one-time host steps listed. Verify that `npx ownmem recall -- "<a known project topic>"` returns a result or an abstention.
```

### Caveat

Codex hooks need three one-time trust steps that OwnMem prints, and Cursor and Gemini CLI need a manual step to register the MCP server.

## How to check past failures before changing code with Ownmem

Repo: [grpcer/ownmem](https://github.com/grpcer/ownmem) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Query project memory for a known failure before an agent edits the affected code.

**Who it is for:** An engineer about to change a deployment, configuration, or performance-sensitive area who suspects the team has already hit this problem.

**The problem:** A proposed fix looks reasonable in isolation, but the same failure was investigated earlier and the lesson lives only in someone's memory.

**The outcome:** A recall result that quotes a matching memory with its trust level, or points to files to read, or abstains and names the gate that refused.

### Steps

1. Run `npx ownmem recall -- "<describe the symptom and proposed change>"` in the repository. (inferred, check the README)
2. Read the trust line on any quoted memory before acting on it.
3. If a memory is marked advisory, re-check it against the code before relying on it.
4. Record any new finding with the memory workflow in the next use case.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repository grpcer/ownmem, ask project memory about <the symptom or proposed change> using `npx ownmem recall -- "<query>"`. Expected output: one of the three delivery tiers, quoted memory, up to three file pointers, or an abstention that names the refusing gate. Verify that any quoted memory shows its trust status before you act on it.
```

### Caveat

Recall only sees memories that exist in the repository, so an abstention means the memory is missing or gated, not that the problem is new.

## How to capture a hard-won lesson as reviewed memory with Ownmem

Repo: [grpcer/ownmem](https://github.com/grpcer/ownmem) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Turn a debugging finding into a scaffolded memory that goes through normal code review.

**Who it is for:** A developer who just solved a non-obvious bug and wants the cause and fix to reach the next agent session and the next teammate.

**The problem:** The explanation stays in a chat log or in one person's head, and the next agent repeats the investigation.

**The outcome:** A new Markdown memory in .ownmem/ that passes the gates, committed in Git so it can be reviewed, reverted, or rejected like any other change.

### Steps

1. Run `npx ownmem new <memory_slug>` to scaffold a memory that passes every gate. (inferred, check the README)
2. Edit the generated Markdown with the cause, the evidence, and the action to take.
3. Run `npx ownmem audit` to check the entry, if the command is available in your installed version. (inferred, check the README)
4. Commit the memory file and open it for review with the code change that motivated it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repository grpcer/ownmem, scaffold a memory named <memory_slug> with `npx ownmem new <memory_slug>`, then fill in the cause and the fix from <the debugging session>. Expected output: a new .ownmem/<memory_slug>.md file that passes the gates. Verify that `npx ownmem recall -- "<a phrase from the memory>"` returns it with an advisory trust line until evidence is attached.
```

### Caveat

The README says the package proposes and refuses but never writes memory on its own, so a person or agent must make and commit every change.

## How to give an MCP-only host read-only project recall with Ownmem

Repo: [grpcer/ownmem](https://github.com/grpcer/ownmem) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Serve recall and read tools from OwnMem to a host that has no hooks.

**Who it is for:** A developer using an MCP-capable agent host that cannot run hooks and who wants project memory available without letting the agent edit it.

**The problem:** The host can call tools but has no hook point, and giving it write access to project memory would let bad entries spread.

**The outcome:** The host can call recall and read against the project's own OwnMem copy, while gate commands and memory writes stay off the surface.

### Steps

1. Run `npx ownmem mcp` in the repository to serve recall and read over stdio.
2. Register the server in the host's MCP settings by following the Plugins guide, so it runs the project's own copy.
3. Complete the one manual MCP step that Cursor or Gemini CLI requires.
4. Ask the host a project question and confirm it answers from the repository memory.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repository grpcer/ownmem, register `npx ownmem mcp` as an MCP server in <host name> following the Plugins guide. Expected output: the host lists exactly two tools, recall and read. Verify that the host cannot call audit, trust, compile, or any write operation.
```

### Caveat

The README says the MCP path exposes only recall and read, so memory writes must still happen through the repository and Git.
