# AI use cases for Grip (guilyx/grip)

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Use cases: 5 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/guilyx-grip/

grip is a git pre-push hook that quizzes you on your own diff and holds the push until you pass a model-graded check.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to block pushes until you can explain your diff with Grip

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install Grip's pre-push hook so each push gets five questions on your change first.

**Who it is for:** A developer who pushes code written partly by AI and wants to confirm they understand it before it leaves their machine.

**The problem:** Code can be pushed without the author being able to explain why it is built that way, where it fails, or how it is known to work.

**The outcome:** Every push is checked against a Grip Score out of 100, and pushes below the passing score wait until the developer passes.

### Steps

1. Install Grip with `pipx install grip-hook`
2. Open your repository and run `grip init` to write .grip.toml and install the pre-push hook
3. Run `git push` and answer the five questions Grip asks about your diff
4. If the score is below the passing score, review the change and push again

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the grip repo at github.com/guilyx/grip, run `grip init` inside <repo path> and then `git push` to trigger the five quiz questions. Expected output: five questions about the staged diff followed by a Grip Score out of 100. Verify that .grip.toml exists in <repo path> and the pre-push hook is installed.
```

### Caveat

Grip grades answers with a model, so the score reflects what the grader accepts and is not a full measure of understanding, as the project's own docs note.

## How to defend a change on a browser whiteboard with Grip

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Draw your change as parts and arrows with the questions pinned to it, including malicious actor cases.

**Who it is for:** A developer preparing to walk a reviewer or team through a change, or wanting a visual check of their own design reasoning.

**The problem:** Answering design questions verbally about a change is hard to prepare for when the change is not laid out visually.

**The outcome:** The change appears in the browser as parts and arrows, with questions pinned to it, so the developer can answer each one on the diagram.

### Steps

1. Install Grip with `pipx install grip-hook`
2. Stage the change you want to defend
3. Run `grip whiteboard` to open the change in your browser
4. Answer the pinned questions, including what a malicious actor could do

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the grip repo at github.com/guilyx/grip, stage the changes in <repo path> and run `grip whiteboard --provider fake` to see the offline whiteboard. Expected output: the change drawn in the browser with questions pinned to it. Verify that the browser page shows the parts, arrows and questions for the staged files.
```

### Caveat

The whiteboard defense is one of several modes, and the README says the hook must be configured with hook_mode = "whiteboard" to defend every push there.

## How to stop a coding agent from pushing until it passes with Grip

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use /grip inside a coding agent and rely on the gate that holds its pushes until you pass.

**Who it is for:** A developer who runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor to write code and wants the agent's pushes held until the developer can defend them.

**The problem:** An agent can write and push a large change quickly, and the developer may not have read or understood all of it.

**The outcome:** The agent cannot push until the developer passes the quiz, and the developer can run /grip to check the change from inside the agent.

### Steps

1. Install Grip with `pipx install grip-hook`
2. Run `grip init` in the repository the agent works in, choosing Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI as the model when installed
3. Inside the agent, run /grip on the current change
4. Answer the questions, then let the agent push once the score reaches the passing score

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the grip repo at github.com/guilyx/grip, run `grip init` in <repo path> and then /grip inside the coding agent on the current change. Expected output: a quiz on the staged diff and a Grip Score out of 100. Verify that a push attempted by the agent is held until the score passes.
```

### Caveat

The README says /grip works in several named agents but does not list the exact setup steps for each, so check the documentation site for the agent you use.

## How to quiz a whole branch before opening a pull request with Grip

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run Grip against everything since main so the full branch is checked, not one commit.

**Who it is for:** A developer or reviewer preparing a pull request that touches many commits and files.

**The problem:** A pull request can contain many changes, and checking only the latest staged edit misses the rest.

**The outcome:** The developer gets questions covering the whole branch since main, and knows whether the pull request is ready to open.

### Steps

1. Install Grip with `pipx install grip-hook`
2. Check out your feature branch in the repository
3. Run `grip quiz --branch` to quiz the whole branch since main
4. Answer the questions and fix any gaps before opening the pull request

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the grip repo at github.com/guilyx/grip, check out the feature branch in <repo path> and run `grip quiz --branch --provider fake` to get an offline quiz on the whole branch. Expected output: five questions covering changes since main. Verify that the questions refer to files changed on the branch.
```

### Caveat

The README describes --branch as quizzing changes since main, so branches with a different base may need the configuration reference checked.

## How to try Grip offline with a scripted grader with Grip

Repo: [guilyx/grip](https://github.com/guilyx/grip) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the fake provider on a scratch repo to see the quiz and whiteboard with no account or key.

**Who it is for:** Anyone curious about Grip who wants to see how the quiz feels before connecting a model or installing a hook.

**The problem:** Installing a git hook and connecting a model feels like a large commitment before knowing what the quiz asks.

**The outcome:** The developer sees five scripted questions in the terminal and the same change in the browser, with nothing blocked.

### Steps

1. Run `pipx install grip-hook` or `uv tool install grip-hook`
2. Run `mkdir try-grip && cd try-grip && git init -q`
3. Run `echo 'def add(a, b): return a + b' > math.py && git add math.py`
4. Run `grip quiz --provider fake` for the terminal quiz, then `grip whiteboard --provider fake` for the browser version

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the grip repo at github.com/guilyx/grip, follow the offline trial in a new folder <repo path> with the fake provider. Expected output: five terminal questions from `grip quiz --provider fake` and a browser whiteboard from `grip whiteboard --provider fake`. Verify that no push was blocked, since grip init was not run.
```

### Caveat

The fake provider uses scripted questions offline, so it shows the workflow but does not grade a real answer with a model.
