# AI use cases for Herdr (herdrdev/herdr)

Repo: [herdrdev/herdr](https://github.com/herdrdev/herdr) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/herdrdev-herdr/

herdr is a terminal runtime for coding agents. It keeps terminals running in a background server when you close the client or lose SSH, restores layouts after a restart, marks every pane as working, blocked or idle, and puts local and remote machines in one window. It runs the agents you already use (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Grok) without wrapping them, and agents can drive herdr through its CLI and socket API to spawn panes and wait on each other.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to run several coding agents and see which one is stuck with Herdr

Repo: [herdrdev/herdr](https://github.com/herdrdev/herdr) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 10 minutes | Basis: From the README

Open Herdr, start each agent in its own pane, and watch the working, blocked or idle markers.

**Who it is for:** A developer with three or four agents going who keeps missing the one waiting for an answer.

**The problem:** Agents stall on a question in a background tab and nobody notices for an hour.

**The outcome:** One window where every agent pane shows its state and blocked agents call for attention.

### Steps

1. Install with `curl -fsSL https://herdr.dev/install.sh | sh`
2. Start it with `herdr`
3. Split panes with tmux-style prefix keys or the mouse and start an agent in each
4. Answer whichever pane shows blocked

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install herdrdev/herdr, open a layout with <n> panes running <agents> on <tasks>, and tell me how to jump to the next blocked pane with the keyboard.
```

### Caveat

Risk, remote script: The installer is a shell script fetched from the internet; review it or build from source with cargo.

## How to keep agents running when your SSH connection drops with Herdr

Repo: [herdrdev/herdr](https://github.com/herdrdev/herdr) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run agents inside Herdr on a remote machine so a closed laptop or lost connection does not kill the work.

**Who it is for:** Someone running long agent jobs on a server or dev box over SSH.

**The problem:** Losing the SSH session kills a half-finished agent run.

**The outcome:** Agents that keep working in Herdr's background server; you reattach and pick up where you left off.

### Steps

1. Install Herdr on the remote machine
2. Start agents in Herdr panes
3. Close the client or lose the connection; terminals keep running
4. Reconnect and reattach; after a full restart Herdr restores the layout and can resume supported agent sessions

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Set up herdrdev/herdr on my server <host>, start <agent> on <task> in a pane, and show me how to detach, reconnect and confirm the agent kept running.
```

### Caveat

After a machine restart the original processes do not survive; Herdr restores the layout and resumes only supported agent sessions.

## How to let one agent spawn and coordinate other agents with Herdr

Repo: [herdrdev/herdr](https://github.com/herdrdev/herdr) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Give an agent the Herdr skill so it can spawn panes, prompt other agents and wait until they are blocked.

**Who it is for:** A developer experimenting with a lead agent that hands work to helpers.

**The problem:** Coordinating several agents by hand means constant tab switching.

**The outcome:** A lead agent that opens helper panes, sends them prompts and waits on their results.

### Steps

1. Install Herdr and add its agent skill to your lead agent
2. Ask the lead agent to split a task and spawn helper panes
3. Let it prompt each helper and wait until one is genuinely blocked
4. Review each pane's output before merging

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
With herdrdev/herdr and its agent skill, have a lead agent split <task> into <n> parts, spawn a pane per part with <agent>, and report when each is done or blocked.
```
