## How to play Doom deathmatch while Claude runs tasks with Intermission

Repo: [jarrodwatts/intermission](https://github.com/jarrodwatts/intermission) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the plugin on macOS and get dropped into a shared Doom game each time Claude is busy.

**Who it is for:** A Claude Code user on macOS who waits on long Claude tasks and wants something to do in the gap.

**The problem:** Waiting for Claude to finish work leaves idle time that is easy to waste.

**The outcome:** Claude opens a game pane after about two seconds of work, returns control with a three-second countdown when it finishes, and yields at once for permission prompts.

### Steps

1. Open Claude Code in Ghostty or kitty on macOS 15 or later.
2. Run `/plugin install intermission --marketplace jarrodwatts/intermission`.
3. Run `/intermission` to turn it on and let the first-time download finish.
4. Give Claude a task and click the game pane to play; use WASD or the arrow keys to move and left click to fire.
5. Run `/intermission off` when you want to stop it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Claude Code session, install the plugin from jarrodwatts/intermission using the marketplace install command, then run /intermission. Confirm the game pane opens after Claude starts a task of a few seconds. Report whether the pane appeared and whether /intermission off stops it.
```

### Caveat

The README lists macOS and Windows only, so Linux users have no supported path and the game needs a terminal that can show pictures.

## How to set up Intermission on Windows with Rio with Intermission

Repo: [jarrodwatts/intermission](https://github.com/jarrodwatts/intermission) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install Rio, add the ConPTY files and the Visual C++ Redistributable, then enable pictures for Claude Code.

**Who it is for:** A Windows 10 or 11 x64 developer who uses Claude Code and wants the game pane to show pictures.

**The problem:** Rio needs extra setup on Windows before the game's pixels display, and Claude Code only sends pictures to recognized terminals.

**The outcome:** Rio shows the game pane inside Claude Code, and /intermission turns the mod on after the setup is complete.

### Steps

1. Install Rio and the Visual C++ Redistributable with `winget install -e --id raphamorim.rio`.
2. Copy conpty.dll and OpenConsole.exe next to rio.exe, following the README commands for the Microsoft ConPTY package, in PowerShell run as administrator.
3. Add `env-vars = ["CLAUDE_CODE_FORCE_TERMINAL_IMAGES=1"]` at the top of %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\rio\config.toml, in Rio only.
4. Open a new Rio window, start `claude`, and run `/plugin install intermission --marketplace jarrodwatts/intermission`.
5. Run `/intermission` to turn it on. If the command is missing, add "CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS=1" to the same env-vars list.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
On this Windows machine, follow the intermission README Windows steps for Rio, then run /intermission in Claude Code from jarrodwatts/intermission. Confirm both conpty.dll and OpenConsole.exe are beside rio.exe and that the game pane shows pictures. Report any step that failed.
```

### Caveat

The README warns that with only conpty.dll, Rio falls back to the Windows console host, which strips the pictures out, so both files are required.

## How to self-host the Intermission game server with Intermission

Repo: [jarrodwatts/intermission](https://github.com/jarrodwatts/intermission) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use deploy.sh to build and run the stock Odamex server on your own droplet.

**Who it is for:** A developer or hobbyist who wants a private Doom server for their own group instead of the shared one.

**The problem:** The default plugin connects to a shared server, and some people want to run their own game host.

**The outcome:** A stock Odamex server built and running on a droplet, reachable by the game client for a group.

### Steps

1. Read deploy.sh in the repo to see what it builds and runs before you execute it.
2. Provision a droplet, the hosting setup the README names as the target.
3. Copy the repo to the droplet and run `./deploy.sh` from the repo root. (inferred, check the README)
4. Confirm the server is running, then note its address for the game client.
5. Check that the server is stock Odamex, as the README describes, before you connect players.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone jarrodwatts/intermission, read deploy.sh, and summarize every command it runs before anything executes. Then run it on the <droplet-host> target only after I approve, and report whether the Odamex server process is running.
```

### Caveat

The README gives no full setup steps for the droplet, so the exact commands beyond deploy.sh must be worked out from the script itself.

Risk, remote script: deploy.sh builds and runs software on a remote droplet, so read the script and confirm its actions before you run it against any host.

## How to study or rebuild the Odamex changes for the mod with Intermission

Repo: [jarrodwatts/intermission](https://github.com/jarrodwatts/intermission) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 90 minutes | Basis: From the README

Apply engine/odamex.patch to the named Odamex commit to see or reproduce the headless engine changes.

**Who it is for:** A C++ or game engine developer who wants to learn how the mod runs Odamex without a window.

**The problem:** The mod changes Odamex to render frames into shared memory or a temp file, and the changes are only described in the README.

**The outcome:** A local Odamex tree at the matching commit with the Intermission patch applied, ready for reading or building.

### Steps

1. Read engine/odamex-commit to get the Odamex commit the patch was made against.
2. Clone Odamex and check out that commit with `git checkout <commit>`. (inferred, check the README)
3. Apply the patch from engine/odamex.patch with `git apply engine/odamex.patch`. (inferred, check the README)
4. Review the diff and note the shared memory or temp file frame output path.
5. Keep the GPL-2.0 license of Odamex in mind for any derived code.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone jarrodwatts/intermission and Odamex, check out the commit listed in engine/odamex-commit, apply engine/odamex.patch, and report whether the patch applies cleanly. Summarize where frames are written and verify the GPL-2.0 note applies to the engine changes.
```

### Caveat

The README does not give the Odamex clone URL or build steps, so the commands above are inferred from the patch and commit files.
