Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Use cases: 5 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/kai-jungsthoefel-soma/

SOMA is a desktop app for designing parametric 3D models in CadQuery Python code, built together with a CLI coding agent of your choice.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to design a printable case from a plain description with SOMA

Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Describe a case or bracket in words and get a CadQuery model you can check and export for printing.

**Who it is for:** A maker who needs a case, bracket or mount for a project and does not want to learn a CAD program.

**The problem:** Building a printable part in a traditional CAD program takes hours of learning and modeling.

**The outcome:** A checked 3D model of the part, exported as STL or 3MF and ready to print.

### Steps

1. Download the SOMA package for your system from somacad.app/download and install it.
2. Install and log in to a CLI agent such as Claude Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI.
3. Start SOMA, click New model, then start your agent with the + above the terminal.
4. Describe the part, its size and the printing material, then click parts or measure in the view and send feedback to the agent.
5. Export the finished model from the menu as STL or 3MF.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, write a CadQuery model for <part description> in the model file, then run `soma build` to rebuild it. Report the final overall dimensions in millimeters and confirm the build finishes without errors.
```

### Caveat

SOMA is an early prototype, mainly tested on Windows, so expect rough edges on other systems.

## How to make a model's dimensions adjustable without code with SOMA

Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have the agent expose key values as parameters so you can change a size without touching the code.

**Who it is for:** A designer who wants to resize a finished part for a different project or printer without reopening the code.

**The problem:** Changing one dimension of a generated model normally means editing the script or asking the agent again.

**The outcome:** A model where chosen dimensions can be changed in SOMA and the model rebuilds with the new values.

### Steps

1. Open the model in SOMA with the agent running in the terminal.
2. Ask the agent to make the dimensions you care about adjustable parameters.
3. Change a parameter value in SOMA and check the 3D view after the rebuild.
4. Repeat for other values, then export the model from the menu.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, make the values <dimension list> in the model file into adjustable parameters, run `soma build`, and confirm that the build succeeds. Verify that each parameter is listed in SOMA and that changing one value changes the model size.
```

### Caveat

The README says file formats and the soma API may still change between 0.x versions, so parameter setups may need updating after upgrades.

## How to check a part for overhangs and thin walls with SOMA

Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the analysis tools on a model to find overhangs, thin walls and weak spots before printing.

**Who it is for:** A 3D printing hobbyist about to print a functional part who wants to catch problems first.

**The problem:** Failed prints from unsupported overhangs or thin walls waste material and time.

**The outcome:** A list of printing and strength issues the agent can fix in the model code before you print.

### Steps

1. Open the model in SOMA and make sure the agent has built it.
2. Ask the agent to analyze the part for overhangs and wall thickness.
3. Run `soma analyze` to get the analysis results.
4. Send the results back to the agent and ask for changes to the flagged areas.
5. Export the updated model as STL or 3MF.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, run `soma analyze` on the model and list every overhang and wall thinner than <minimum wall thickness> millimeters. Propose code changes for each issue, then run `soma build` and confirm the build still succeeds.
```

### Caveat

The README lists analysis for overhangs, wall thickness and FEM strength, but it does not say how accurate the results are, so check important parts yourself.

## How to render a moving mechanism as a video with SOMA

Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Describe a motion in Python and render the animation of a model to video.

**Who it is for:** A product designer or teacher who wants to show how a mechanism or assembly moves.

**The problem:** Showing how a moving assembly works is hard with static renders or screenshots.

**The outcome:** A video file of the model moving as described in the animation code.

### Steps

1. Open the model in SOMA and check that the assembly builds.
2. Ask the agent to describe the motion of the parts in Python.
3. Play the animation in the SOMA viewer to check the motion.
4. Run `soma render` to render the animation to video.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, write an animation in Python that moves <part name> through <motion description>, then run `soma render` to produce a video. Report the output file path and confirm the rendered video shows the expected motion.
```

### Caveat

The README does not say which video formats or settings `soma render` supports, so check the output file before sharing it.

## How to move an existing CadQuery script into SOMA with SOMA

Repo: [Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA](https://github.com/Kai-Jungsthoefel/SOMA) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Open a CadQuery script in SOMA, let the agent extend it, and export it back as a script.

**Who it is for:** A developer with an existing CadQuery script who wants agent help and a 3D viewer in one place.

**The problem:** CadQuery scripts are hard to review and change visually, and extending them by hand is slow.

**The outcome:** A SOMA model built from your script, with agent-made changes, that can be exported back as a CadQuery script.

### Steps

1. Install SOMA and start it.
2. Start your agent with the + above the terminal, then ask it to load your existing CadQuery script into a SOMA model.
3. Ask the agent to make the changes you need and check the result in the 3D view.
4. Export the model from the menu as a script for CQ-editor or VS Code.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, import the CadQuery script at <script path> into the model, make the change <change description>, run `soma build`, and report whether the build succeeds. Verify that the exported script still produces the same part geometry.
```

### Caveat

The README says the exported script includes compatibility code under Apache 2.0, so check the license terms before sharing the exported script.

Risk, credentials: The agent runs in a terminal on your machine with the login you set up, so review its commands and permission settings before letting it change files.
