## How to auto-name Herdr tabs from their Git branch and folder with Herdr Auto Title

Repo: [kryptamine/herdr-auto-title](https://github.com/kryptamine/herdr-auto-title) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the plugin so each Herdr tab shows its folder and branch without manual renaming.

**Who it is for:** A developer working on several branches across several repos in Herdr at once, who loses track of which tab is which.

**The problem:** Herdr tabs keep generic or stale names, so finding the tab for a specific feature branch means clicking through each one.

**The outcome:** Each tab is named after its folder and non-default branch, with its position number in front, and the plugin keeps running after restart.

### Steps

1. Confirm Herdr is version 0.8.2 or newer and Go 1.24 or newer is installed.
2. Run `herdr plugin install kryptamine/herdr-auto-title --ref v0.14.0`.
3. Run `herdr plugin action invoke herdr.auto-title.restart` to start the plugin now.
4. Open a directory on a feature branch in a new tab and check that the tab name shows the folder and the branch.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repo kryptamine/herdr-auto-title, install the plugin into the Herdr setup on <target machine> with `herdr plugin install kryptamine/herdr-auto-title --ref v0.14.0` and then start it with `herdr plugin action invoke herdr.auto-title.restart`. Report the Herdr tab names for two tabs, one on the default branch and one on a feature branch, and confirm the feature branch name appears in its tab title.
```

### Caveat

The first start renames every pane, including panes already named by hand, so rename important panes after the first start or accept that they will be renamed.

## How to tell Claude Code panes apart in Herdr's goto panel with Herdr Auto Title

Repo: [kryptamine/herdr-auto-title](https://github.com/kryptamine/herdr-auto-title) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Give each Claude Code pane its own name so the goto panel stops listing every one as claude.

**Who it is for:** A developer running several Claude Code sessions across Herdr tabs who needs to switch to the right session quickly.

**The problem:** Herdr's goto panel lists every Claude Code pane as claude, so the sessions cannot be told apart.

**The outcome:** Each Claude Code pane gets its own label based on what the session is doing, and the goto panel shows distinct names.

### Steps

1. Install the plugin with `herdr plugin install kryptamine/herdr-auto-title --ref v0.14.0`.
2. Install Herdr's integration for Claude Code with `herdr integration install claude`.
3. Run `herdr plugin action invoke herdr.auto-title.restart` so the setting takes effect.
4. Start two Claude Code sessions in separate panes and open the goto panel with prefix plus g to check that each pane has its own name.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo kryptamine/herdr-auto-title, set up Claude Code pane naming on <target machine> by running the Herdr integration install for claude and restarting the plugin. Report the goto panel entries for two open Claude Code panes and confirm they show different names instead of claude.
```

### Caveat

Pane names depend on Herdr's integration being installed for Claude Code, and on Windows Herdr reports only the shell or a recognised agent per pane, so detection may be limited there.

## How to show each workspace's active task in the Herdr sidebar with Herdr Auto Title

Repo: [kryptamine/herdr-auto-title](https://github.com/kryptamine/herdr-auto-title) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Display the active tab's topic under each workspace name in the Herdr sidebar.

**Who it is for:** A developer with several workspaces in Herdr who wants to see what each one is working on without opening it.

**The problem:** The Herdr sidebar shows workspace names and branches only, so the current task in each workspace is hidden.

**The outcome:** Each workspace row shows its name and branch, with the active tab's topic in bold underneath.

### Steps

1. Install the plugin with `herdr plugin install kryptamine/herdr-auto-title --ref v0.14.0`.
2. Open Herdr's config.toml and add the sidebar rows that include the $topic token, as shown in the README's recommended setup.
3. Make sure the setting HERDR_AUTO_TITLE_WORKSPACES is left at its default of true, or set it to true in config.env.
4. Run `herdr plugin action invoke herdr.auto-title.restart` and check that the sidebar shows the topic under each workspace.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
For the repo kryptamine/herdr-auto-title, add the README's [ui.sidebar.spaces] rows containing the $topic token to the Herdr config.toml on <target machine>, then restart the plugin. Report the sidebar rows for two workspaces and confirm each shows a topic line under its name and branch.
```

### Caveat

Each client reads its own config.toml, so the sidebar rows must be set on every machine you attach from.

## How to shorten or hide tab titles with a config.env file with Herdr Auto Title

Repo: [kryptamine/herdr-auto-title](https://github.com/kryptamine/herdr-auto-title) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Set title length, branch display, and position using a config.env file.

**Who it is for:** A developer whose Herdr tab titles are too long or cluttered with branch names and needs them trimmed.

**The problem:** Default titles may be wider than the tab bar or include branch text the user does not want.

**The outcome:** Tab titles stay within a chosen width, long branch names are shortened or hidden, and the settings persist across updates.

### Steps

1. Copy the file config.env.example from the repo to ~/.config/herdr-auto-title/config.env.
2. Uncomment and set HERDR_AUTO_TITLE_MAX_LENGTH for the longest title width, or HERDR_AUTO_TITLE_BRANCH_MAX set to 0 to hide branches.
3. Run `herdr plugin action invoke herdr.auto-title.restart`, since the file is read once at startup.
4. Check that a tab on a feature branch shows the expected title width or no branch.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the repo kryptamine/herdr-auto-title, create ~/.config/herdr-auto-title/config.env on <target machine> from config.env.example with HERDR_AUTO_TITLE_BRANCH_MAX set to 0, then restart the plugin. Report the tab titles before and after the change and confirm no branch name appears in them.
```

### Caveat

The config file is read only at startup, so every change needs a restart before it takes effect.
