## How to let ChatGPT inspect and edit a local project with Codexless

Repo: [liyana31811/Codexless](https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Run Codexless on your machine so ChatGPT can read, edit, and test files in a project you choose.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants ChatGPT to work on a local codebase from the normal Chat window without moving the task into another app.

**The problem:** Keeping project rules and tool access in a second workflow means repeating setup and switching context for every change.

**The outcome:** ChatGPT can inspect the project, edit files, run bounded commands and Git, and verify results, reusing existing Codex Skills and project rules.

### Steps

1. Clone or download the Codexless source tree for the release you want, then run `.\bin\codexless-install.cmd` on Windows or `sh ./bin/codexless-install.sh` on Apple Silicon macOS.
2. Check your project with `& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Codexless\bin\codexless-doctor.cmd" --cwd "C:\path\to\your\project"` on Windows, or `"$HOME/Library/Application Support/Codexless/app/bin/codexless-doctor.sh" --cwd "/path/to/your/project"` on macOS.
3. Start the HTTP service with `& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Codexless\bin\codexless-http.cmd"` on Windows, or `"$HOME/Library/Application Support/Codexless/app/bin/codexless-http.sh"` on macOS.
4. Expose the local endpoint through an authenticated Tunnel or remote MCP endpoint and connect it to ChatGPT as a custom app or developer-mode MCP connection.
5. In a normal ChatGPT Chat, ask for a specific change in your project and review the files it reports editing.

Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, install it on this machine, run the doctor check against <project-path>, and report which local project tools ChatGPT can now call. Verify that the doctor check passes before reporting success.
```
### Caveat
Codexless is an independent project, not an OpenAI product, and the README says it does not silently widen Codex trust or configure your Tunnel for you.
Risk, credentials: Exposing the local endpoint through a Tunnel or remote MCP connection gives a remote caller access bounded by your local Codex authorization, so use an authenticated Tunnel and review the permission ceiling in SECURITY.md first.
## How to let ChatGPT work in your signed-in Chrome or Edge with Codexless
Repo: [liyana31811/Codexless](https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README
Have ChatGPT read pages, click, type, and download in the browser profile you select.
**Who it is for:** A user who needs ChatGPT to act on a website that requires their existing login, such as a portal or dashboard, within a single Chat.
**The problem:** Doing browser steps by hand for a repeated web task is slow, and most AI browser tools cannot use your existing signed-in profile.
**The outcome:** ChatGPT reads tabs and screenshots, navigates, clicks, enters text, and prepares uploads or downloads in the selected Chrome or Edge profile.
### Steps
1. Complete the Codexless install and start the HTTP service as described in the setup for your platform.
2. Install the ChatGPT browser extension in Chrome or Edge, and enable it only in the profile you intend to use.
3. Open ChatGPT's Agent permissions and set Browsing to the level you want, such as Requires approval for new sites.
4. If you need local file upload, enable Allow access to file URLs in the ChatGPT browser extension settings.
5. In Chat, ask ChatGPT to open a specific page, perform the named steps, and report the result.
Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, ask ChatGPT to open <site-url> in the connected browser profile, complete <task>, and report the final page state. Verify the result by reading the page or a viewport screenshot before reporting completion.
```

### Caveat

Codexless does not expose arbitrary JavaScript, raw selectors, arbitrary coordinates, or unrestricted keyboard input, and if multiple Chrome profiles expose extension backends it fails closed instead of guessing.

Risk, credentials: Browser work uses your selected local profile and its existing site login state, so ChatGPT can act inside accounts you are already signed into.

## How to read and update a connected Excel workbook from Chat with Codexless

Repo: [liyana31811/Codexless](https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Let ChatGPT search, read, write, and format ranges in a workbook that is already connected.

**Who it is for:** An analyst or operations user who keeps data in an Excel workbook and wants ChatGPT to update it during the same conversation.

**The problem:** Reviewing and editing many ranges by hand, or switching between Chat and Excel, slows down routine workbook changes.

**The outcome:** ChatGPT reads sheet metadata and ranges, searches the workbook, writes values, and applies formatting through the public Excel Preview tools.

### Steps

1. Complete the Codexless install and start the HTTP service for your platform.
2. Connect the target workbook through the supported Document Control / Excel Add-in path, since Codexless does not use CUA for public Excel work.
3. In Chat, ask ChatGPT to run excel_status to confirm the workbook is connected.
4. Ask ChatGPT to read the sheet metadata or ranges, then describe the exact cells it plans to change.
5. Approve the write or formatting request, then ask ChatGPT to read the changed range back and confirm the values.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, ask ChatGPT to check the connected workbook with excel_status, then update <sheet-and-range> with <new-values>. Verify the change by reading back the same range with excel_read_ranges before reporting success.
```

### Caveat

The public Excel Preview is bounded to the six listed tools and does not expose generic Office scripting, a raw MCP executor, or the wider dynamic tool surface.

Risk, credentials: Write and format actions change the live workbook, and the README notes a successful dispatch is not treated as business completion, so always read the range back to verify.

## How to hand a heavy coding task to Codex after approval with Codexless

Repo: [liyana31811/Codexless](https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Approve a metered Codex run from Chat, then check progress and steer it until it finishes.

**Who it is for:** A developer who has a larger coding or refactoring job that genuinely needs the Codex model and wants to stay in ChatGPT while it runs.

**The problem:** Model-backed work usually means leaving the chat for another app, and it is easy to start metered usage without a clear check.

**The outcome:** ChatGPT shows a text approval with the task, model information, quota context, and Task ID, then runs the task in the background and returns a Result with evidence.

### Steps

1. Complete the Codexless install and start the HTTP service for your platform.
2. In Chat, describe the task that needs the Codex model and wait for the text approval showing the task, model information, quota context, and Task ID.
3. Reply Yes only if you accept the metered Codex call; reply No to cancel.
4. Ask ChatGPT to check the current task with codex.agent_show to see the latest bounded progress.
5. When the task reaches a terminal state, read the returned Result with its outcome, verification evidence, remaining blocker, and Task ID.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, ask ChatGPT to run <task> through the Codex model after showing the approval with its Task ID. Verify the outcome by reading the final Result and its verification evidence before reporting completion.
```

### Caveat

Progress is read on demand through codex.agent_show rather than pushed automatically, and steer only works while the same turn is still active.

Risk, credentials: Approving a Codex call creates normal metered Codex usage, and Codexless does not increase, reset, or bypass your Codex usage limits or plan rules.
