# AI use cases for Playwright MCP (microsoft/playwright-mcp)

Playwright MCP is Microsoft's MCP server for browser automation with Playwright. It lets an LLM work with web pages through structured accessibility snapshots instead of screenshots, so no vision model is needed. It installs with one npx command in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Amp and other clients, and supports Chrome, Firefox, WebKit and Edge. The README suggests the Playwright CLI with skills for token-heavy coding agent work and MCP for exploratory, stateful agent loops.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to give Claude Code or Codex a real browser in one command with Playwright MCP

Repo: [microsoft/playwright-mcp](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 5 minutes | Basis: From the README

Register Playwright MCP so your agent can open pages, click, type and read results.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants the agent to verify its own frontend changes in a browser.

**The problem:** Agents cannot see whether a form or flow they built actually works.

**The outcome:** An agent that drives a browser through accessibility snapshots and reports what happened.

### Steps

1. Claude Code: `claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest`
2. Codex: `codex mcp add playwright npx "@playwright/mcp@latest"`
3. Other clients: add an mcpServers entry named playwright that runs npx with @playwright/mcp@latest
4. Ask the agent to open your app and walk through a flow

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Add microsoft/playwright-mcp to my <Claude Code or Codex>, then open http://localhost:<port>, sign up with a test email, and report each step and any error text on the page.
```

## How to let an agent explore and test a signup or checkout flow with Playwright MCP

Repo: [microsoft/playwright-mcp](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use MCP's persistent browser state for an exploratory test that clicks through a full flow.

**Who it is for:** A QA engineer or solo founder who wants a quick smoke test of the main user journey after each change.

**The problem:** Writing and maintaining end-to-end tests for every flow takes time a small team does not have.

**The outcome:** A step-by-step report of the flow, where it broke, and a draft Playwright test to keep.

### Steps

1. Install the server in your MCP client
2. Point the agent at a staging URL and describe the journey
3. Let it act on the page through accessibility snapshots
4. Ask it to turn the successful path into a Playwright test file

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using microsoft/playwright-mcp, explore the <flow> on <staging url> as a new user, report every step with what you saw, flag anything broken, and write the passing path as a Playwright test.
```

### Caveat

Run it against staging or test accounts; the agent acts with whatever session the browser has.

## How to check your site in Firefox, WebKit or Edge through the agent with Playwright MCP

Repo: [microsoft/playwright-mcp](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Choose the browser with the --browser option so the agent tests beyond Chrome.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants a quick cross-browser check without a device lab.

**The problem:** Bugs that only appear in Safari's engine or Firefox slip through Chrome-only testing.

**The outcome:** The same agent-driven check run in another browser engine.

### Steps

1. Add the server to your client
2. Set the --browser option to chrome, firefox, webkit or msedge (or the PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_BROWSER variable)
3. Ask the agent to load the page and compare layout and errors with Chrome

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Configure microsoft/playwright-mcp with --browser webkit, load <url>, and list any console errors or broken layout compared with Chrome.
```
