# AI use cases for Skill Recorder (microsoft/skill-recorder)

Repo: [microsoft/skill-recorder](https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/microsoft-skill-recorder/

Skill Recorder is a desktop app that records your on-screen work session and uses the GitHub Copilot CLI to turn it into an intent, ordered steps, and a reusable Skill or scheduled Automation.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to turn one recorded task into a reusable Skill with Skill Recorder

Repo: [microsoft/skill-recorder](https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Record a task once, analyze it with Copilot, and generate a SKILL.md an agent can run.

**Who it is for:** An office worker or analyst who submits the same forms, reports, or web tasks every week and wants an agent to handle the next one.

**The problem:** Repeating a multi-step computer task by hand is slow, and writing agent instructions from scratch is hard without a clear example.

**The outcome:** A SKILL.md procedure that generalizes from your single recording, such as submitting one form and applying the same steps to all of them.

### Steps

1. Open the latest release page and copy the Commit-pinned installation command for your operating system, then paste it into PowerShell or Terminal and press Enter.
2. On macOS, grant Screen Recording permission when Skill Recorder asks on first launch.
3. Press record (or Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, ⌘⇧R on macOS), do the task once, then finish the recording.
4. Click Analyze, sign in to Copilot if prompted, then review and edit the intent and ordered steps until they read right.
5. Choose Review SKILL.md to read the generated file, then choose Add or Export to create the Skill.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the Skill Recorder repo at microsoft/skill-recorder to turn my recording of <task name> into a Skill. Expected output: a SKILL.md file with frontmatter and ordered steps that prefer native tools over UI clicks. Verify that the procedure applies to a second example of the same task before you rely on it.
```

### Caveat

Choosing Analyze sends the event timeline, screen images, narration text, and requested terminal excerpts to GitHub's cloud for Copilot to process.

Risk, remote script: The installer is a one-line command that downloads a pinned Node.js runtime and builds the app on your machine, so review it with the release page's inspect-first instructions if your organization requires it.

## How to schedule a recorded task as a recurring Automation with Skill Recorder

Repo: [microsoft/skill-recorder](https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Turn an approved analysis into an Automation that runs the same procedure on a schedule or trigger.

**Who it is for:** A team member who needs the same report pulled, checked, or filed on a regular cadence and does not want to repeat it by hand.

**The problem:** A one-time recording helps only if the procedure runs again without you starting it each time.

**The outcome:** An Automation built from your approved steps that runs the same procedure on a schedule or trigger.

### Steps

1. Record the task once with the floating recording bar, then finish the recording.
2. Click Analyze and edit the intent and ordered steps until the plan is correct.
3. From the approved analysis, choose the option to create an Automation.
4. Confirm the schedule or trigger in the builder, then check the generated procedure before it runs unattended.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the Skill Recorder repo at microsoft/skill-recorder to build an Automation from my approved analysis of <recurring task>. Expected output: a scheduled Automation that runs the same ordered procedure. Verify on the first scheduled run that the output matches what you recorded.
```

### Caveat

The README describes Automations only at a high level, so confirm the scheduling options inside the app before you depend on a specific cadence.

## How to capture a terminal workflow as a Skill with native tools with Skill Recorder

Repo: [microsoft/skill-recorder](https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Record commands run in the app's recorded terminal and turn them into a Skill that uses native tools.

**Who it is for:** A developer or DevOps engineer who runs the same command sequence in a terminal and wants an agent to repeat it.

**The problem:** Replaying terminal steps by hand is error-prone, and agents work better with direct tool calls than with copied keystrokes.

**The outcome:** A Skill that uses native tools such as the gh CLI where possible, built from the commands and output you recorded.

### Steps

1. Open the session-scoped terminal from the floating recording bar while recording.
2. Run the command sequence for the task, keeping secrets out of the terminal.
3. Finish the recording, then click Analyze and review the intent and ordered steps.
4. Choose Review SKILL.md to confirm the Skill prefers native tools, then add or export it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the Skill Recorder repo at microsoft/skill-recorder to convert my terminal session for <workflow> into a Skill. Expected output: a SKILL.md that calls native tools such as the gh CLI instead of replaying keystrokes. Verify that no secrets appear in the generated file.
```

### Caveat

The recorded terminal captures only the app-owned terminal for that recording, not your other terminal windows.

Risk, credentials: Commands and terminal output are captured in the session, so any token or password typed or printed in the terminal can end up in the analysis sent to GitHub's cloud.

## How to score the describer and builder with the eval suite with Skill Recorder

Repo: [microsoft/skill-recorder](https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the fixture-based evals to check how well a Skill generalizes from one recording.

**Who it is for:** A developer changing Skill Recorder's prompts or builder who needs to check that generalization did not regress.

**The problem:** Changes to the describer or builder can quietly weaken the generated Skills, and manual review does not scale.

**The outcome:** Scores for the describer, terminal use, and builder generalization against synthetic recordings.

### Steps

1. Check out a release revision of the repo.
2. Run `npm ci`.
3. Run `npm run compliance:licenses`.
4. Run `npm run eval:builder` to score the skill and automation generalization.
5. Run `npm run eval` and `npm run eval:terminal` to score the describer and terminal redaction.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the microsoft/skill-recorder repo to run the builder eval after my change to <file>. Expected output: scores for skill and automation generalization compared with the previous revision. Verify that the score for terminal redaction did not drop.
```

### Caveat

The README says the developer setup requires Node.js 24, and the eval scripts run against synthetic recordings, not your own work sessions.
