# AI use cases for Milvus (milvus-io/milvus)

Repo: [milvus-io/milvus](https://github.com/milvus-io/milvus) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/milvus-io-milvus/

Milvus is a high-performance vector database built for scale, written in Go and C++ with CPU and GPU acceleration. It stores vectors alongside scalar data, supports index types such as HNSW, IVF and FLAT, full text search with BM25 and hybrid search with sparse vectors, multi-tenancy, hot and cold storage, authentication, TLS and RBAC. It runs as Milvus Lite in a local file, as a distributed Kubernetes-native cluster, or on Zilliz Cloud.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to start a vector database in a single local file with Milvus

Repo: [milvus-io/milvus](https://github.com/milvus-io/milvus) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install pymilvus with Milvus Lite and create a collection in a local file, no server needed.

**Who it is for:** A developer prototyping RAG in a notebook who does not want to run a database server yet.

**The problem:** Setting up a database server just to try vector search slows down early experiments.

**The outcome:** A working vector collection persisted to a local .db file that you can later move to a server.

### Steps

1. Install the SDK with `pip install -U pymilvus`, and pymilvus[milvus-lite] for Milvus Lite
2. Create a local database with `MilvusClient("milvus_demo.db")`
3. Create a collection with `client.create_collection` using your embedding dimension, for example 768
4. Insert your embedded data with `client.insert`
5. Search with `client.search`, setting limit and output_fields

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using milvus-io/milvus with Milvus Lite, create milvus_demo.db, embed <documents> with <model>, create a collection with the right dimension, insert them, and search for <query>. Show me the top 3 results with their text.
```

### Caveat

Milvus Lite is for quickstarts; move to a Milvus server or Zilliz Cloud for production scale.

## How to build a RAG pipeline on Milvus with Milvus

Repo: [milvus-io/milvus](https://github.com/milvus-io/milvus) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 1 hour | Basis: From the README

Store document chunks in Milvus and retrieve them for an LLM, following the Build RAG tutorial.

**Who it is for:** A developer adding chat-with-your-docs to a product, using LangChain or LlamaIndex.

**The problem:** Without a proper vector store, retrieval is slow and does not scale past a demo.

**The outcome:** A RAG app that retrieves relevant chunks from Milvus and passes them to your LLM.

### Steps

1. Install `pip install -U pymilvus` and set up Milvus Lite or connect to a server
2. Follow the Build RAG with Milvus tutorial linked in the README
3. Embed your chunks and insert them with their text as fields
4. Retrieve with `client.search` and pass the returned text to your LLM
5. Use the LangChain or LlamaIndex integration if you already use those frameworks

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Build a RAG pipeline for <documents> on milvus-io/milvus following the Build RAG with Milvus tutorial: chunk, embed with <model>, insert, retrieve top 3 with client.search and answer with <LLM>. Test it on <questions>.
```

### Caveat

The README links to the tutorial for full code; answer quality depends on your chunking and embedding model.

## How to add full text and hybrid search to vector search with Milvus

Repo: [milvus-io/milvus](https://github.com/milvus-io/milvus) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 2 hours | Basis: From the README

Use BM25 full text search and sparse vectors alongside dense vectors for better recall.

**Who it is for:** A search team whose semantic search misses exact names, codes and rare terms.

**The problem:** Dense vectors alone can miss exact keyword matches users expect.

**The outcome:** Search that combines BM25 or learned sparse embeddings with dense semantic results.

### Steps

1. Connect to Milvus with `MilvusClient` using your server URI and token
2. Follow the Full Text Search with Milvus tutorial to enable BM25
3. Follow the Hybrid Search with Milvus tutorial to combine dense and sparse embeddings
4. Compare results against dense-only search on real queries
5. Turn on authentication, TLS and RBAC before exposing the server

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
On my milvus-io/milvus server, add BM25 full text search and hybrid search for collection <name> following the README's tutorials. Compare hybrid and dense-only results on <queries> and recommend which to ship.
```

### Caveat

Hybrid search setup lives in the linked tutorials, not in the README itself.
