## How to ask your AI assistant about your bank balances with Bankmcp

Repo: [noskillish/bankmcp](https://github.com/noskillish/bankmcp) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run BankMCP on your own machine and ask Claude or Cursor about balances and transactions.

**Who it is for:** A individual who already uses Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Cursor and wants quick answers about their own accounts without opening the banking app.

**The problem:** Checking whether an invoice was paid or what was spent on groceries means logging into the bank and scrolling through transactions by hand.

**The outcome:** The assistant answers balance and transaction questions from your own accounts, read-only, with the server running on your computer.

### Steps

1. Install Node 24 or newer, then run `claude mcp add bankmcp -- npx -y bankmcp` for Claude Code, or download Bankmcp.mcpb from the releases page for Claude Desktop.
2. Ask your assistant anything about your bank. It replies with a localhost address; open it.
3. On the setup page, register an application at Enable Banking using the listed values, then enter the application id and choose the .pem key file.
4. Accept the one-time localhost certificate warning in your browser, then say "connect my bank" and log in at your bank.
5. Ask a question such as "What did we spend on groceries in August?" and check the answer against your bank app.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo noskillish/bankmcp, set up BankMCP on this machine for <bank name>, then ask the assistant for the booked balance of each account. Expected output: one balance per linked account. Verify one balance against the bank's own app before trusting the answers.
```

### Caveat

The server still uses Enable Banking between your machine and the bank, so that hop is not on your computer and the README notes it cannot be avoided.

Risk, credentials: The setup stores an Enable Banking application key on your machine, and the bank login happens at your bank's own site, so keep the key file and state folder private.

## How to get alerts when a balance or payment changes with Bankmcp

Repo: [noskillish/bankmcp](https://github.com/noskillish/bankmcp) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Create watches that notify a Slack channel or webhook when balances or payments cross a rule.

**Who it is for:** A person who wants to know about low balances or an overdue incoming payment without checking the bank every day.

**The problem:** Balances and incoming payments change without notice, and checking manually is slow and easy to forget.

**The outcome:** A server-side watch sends a notification to your webhook when a rule fires, checked at most four times a day.

### Steps

1. Set the environment variable NOTIFY_WEBHOOK_URL on your server to a Slack incoming webhook or a URL that accepts a JSON POST.
2. Deploy BankMCP on a small server using one of the listed hosts, or run the Docker command `docker run -d --name bankmcp --restart unless-stopped -p 8080:8080 -v bankmcp-data:/data ghcr.io/noskillish/bankmcp:latest`. (inferred, check the README)
3. In your assistant, say "connect my bank" and confirm the accounts appear.
4. Ask the assistant to create a watch, for example "Tell me when my balance drops below 5,000".
5. Ask the assistant to list your watches with list_watches to confirm the rule is saved.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo noskillish/bankmcp, create a balance watch on the account labelled <account label> with a threshold of <amount>. Expected output: a saved watch returned by list_watches with its rule and webhook target. Verify that the webhook URL is set and that the watch shows the correct threshold.
```

### Caveat

Watches only check accounts about four times a day because of the PSD2 limit for unattended access, so they are not real-time alerts.

Risk, credentials: The webhook URL can receive account balance and payment details, so use a private Slack channel or an endpoint you control.

## How to get a monthly spending summary and budget with Bankmcp

Repo: [noskillish/bankmcp](https://github.com/noskillish/bankmcp) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the built-in monthly-summary and build-budget prompts to review last month's spending.

**Who it is for:** A household or freelancer who wants a monthly review of where money went and a simple budget based on real transactions.

**The problem:** Building a monthly picture of spending by hand from bank exports is slow and tends to be skipped.

**The outcome:** The assistant produces a monthly summary of your accounts and a budget draft based on your transactions.

### Steps

1. Complete the local setup with `claude mcp add bankmcp -- npx -y bankmcp` or connect a hosted server.
2. Say "connect my bank" and give each account a label such as "Everyday" when the assistant suggests it.
3. Run the monthly-summary prompt for the last full month.
4. Run the build-budget prompt and review the proposed categories.
5. Check two transaction totals against your bank app before you rely on the summary.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo noskillish/bankmcp, run the monthly-summary prompt for <month and year> on the account labelled <account label>. Expected output: a summary of income and spending for that month. Verify that one category total matches the transactions listed by get_transactions.
```

### Caveat

The README warns that the local 8B model made a wrong total, so check any summary totals against your bank before acting on them.

## How to find subscriptions and what they cost per year with Bankmcp

Repo: [noskillish/bankmcp](https://github.com/noskillish/bankmcp) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the subscription-audit prompt to list recurring payments and their yearly cost.

**Who it is for:** A person who suspects forgotten subscriptions are draining their account and wants a list with yearly totals.

**The problem:** Recurring charges are spread across months and banks, so their total yearly cost is hard to see.

**The outcome:** A list of recurring payments with what each costs per year, based on your own transactions.

### Steps

1. Connect BankMCP using `claude mcp add bankmcp -- npx -y bankmcp` or a hosted connector URL.
2. Say "connect my bank" and approve the consent at your bank.
3. Run the subscription-audit prompt on the account that pays the subscriptions.
4. Ask the assistant to convert each monthly or annual charge into a yearly cost.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo noskillish/bankmcp, run the subscription-audit prompt on the account labelled <account label>. Expected output: a list of recurring charges with yearly cost for each. Verify one charge against the matching line in get_transactions.
```

### Caveat

The audit only sees transactions in the accounts you linked, so subscriptions paid from another account will not appear.

## How to query your bank with a local Ollama model with Bankmcp

Repo: [noskillish/bankmcp](https://github.com/noskillish/bankmcp) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 90 minutes | Basis: From the README

Bridge a local Ollama model to BankMCP so no AI vendor sees your transactions.

**Who it is for:** A privacy-minded person with a capable machine who wants to query their bank without sending transaction data to an AI vendor.

**The problem:** Cloud assistants receive your transaction data, and some people want the model to run entirely on their own hardware.

**The outcome:** A local model answers questions about your accounts through the same tools, though the README calls this experimental.

### Steps

1. Install Ollama and pull a model with `ollama pull qwen3:8b`.
2. Clone the repo and run the setup needed for the local bridge.
3. Complete the Enable Banking application setup and connect your bank.
4. Ask a question with `npm run chat -- "what's my balance?"`.
5. Compare each answer with your bank app, since the README reports a wrong total from an 8B model.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo noskillish/bankmcp, run `npm run chat -- "<question>"` with the Ollama model qwen3:8b. Expected output: an answer that lists the balance for each linked account. Verify each per-account balance against the bank app before trusting any total.
```

### Caveat

The README says an 8B model is not yet trustworthy with money and that an answer took about ten minutes on a MacBook Air with 24 GB.

Risk, credentials: Enable Banking still receives each request between your machine and the bank, so a local model does not remove that data hop.
