# AI use cases for OpenBB (openbq-org/OpenBB)

Repo: [openbq-org/OpenBB](https://github.com/openbq-org/OpenBB) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/openbq-org-openbb/

OpenBB's Open Data Platform (ODP) is an open-source toolset that connects proprietary, licensed and public financial data once and exposes it to Python for quants, OpenBB Workspace and Excel for analysts, MCP servers for AI agents and REST APIs for other apps. It installs with pip, includes a command line interface, and can run a local API backend for the OpenBB Workspace.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to pull market data into Python in three lines with OpenBB

Repo: [openbq-org/OpenBB](https://github.com/openbq-org/OpenBB) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the package and load price history into a pandas DataFrame with one call.

**Who it is for:** A quant or student who wants clean market data in a notebook without writing a client for each source.

**The problem:** Every data provider has its own API, format and authentication.

**The outcome:** Historical prices as a DataFrame, with the same interface across many providers.

### Steps

1. Run `pip install openbb`
2. In Python, import with `from openbb import obb`
3. Fetch history with `obb.equity.price.historical("AAPL")`
4. Convert it with `output.to_dataframe()` and analyse it with pandas

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using openbq-org/OpenBB, install openbb, load daily price history for <ticker> into a DataFrame, and give me the last 20 rows and the 50 day average. Note which data provider served it.
```

### Caveat

The README says its data is not necessarily accurate. Not financial advice: paper trade first, and remember you can lose money.

## How to run your own data backend for OpenBB Workspace with OpenBB

Repo: [openbq-org/OpenBB](https://github.com/openbq-org/OpenBB) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start the ODP API server locally and connect it to OpenBB Workspace as a backend.

**Who it is for:** An analyst who wants their own data sources inside OpenBB Workspace dashboards and AI agents.

**The problem:** Data stuck in local scripts never reaches the dashboards the team uses.

**The outcome:** A FastAPI backend on 127.0.0.1:6900 connected to OpenBB Workspace, with its apps listed.

### Steps

1. Run `pip install openbb`
2. Start the server with `openbb-api`; it launches FastAPI via Uvicorn at 127.0.0.1:6900
3. Sign in to OpenBB Workspace, open the Apps tab and click Connect backend
4. Name it Open Data Platform, enter the local URL, click Test, then Add

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install openbq-org/OpenBB, start openbb-api locally, and confirm it answers at 127.0.0.1:6900. Then list the steps to connect it as a backend in OpenBB Workspace and what the Test button should report.
```

### Caveat

The backend runs on localhost, so Workspace in your browser must be able to reach that machine. Not financial advice: paper trade first, and remember you can lose money.

## How to query financial data from the command line with OpenBB

Repo: [openbq-org/OpenBB](https://github.com/openbq-org/OpenBB) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the ODP CLI and pull data straight from your terminal.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants quick data lookups without opening a notebook.

**The problem:** Opening Python for every quick lookup breaks your flow.

**The outcome:** Financial data queried and printed from the ODP CLI.

### Steps

1. Run `pip install openbb-cli`
2. Start the CLI and explore its menus
3. Follow the CLI installation docs if you prefer cloning with `git clone https://github.com/OpenBB-finance/OpenBB.git`
4. Add provider API keys for sources that need them

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install openbq-org/OpenBB's CLI with pip install openbb-cli, look up price history for <ticker>, and tell me which commands you used.
```

### Caveat

The repo now lives under the openbq-org account, and older links to the previous account redirect there. Not financial advice: paper trade first, and remember you can lose money.
