# AI use cases for Openwhispr (OpenWhispr/openwhispr)

Repo: [OpenWhispr/openwhispr](https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/openwhispr-openwhispr/

OpenWhispr is a free, open-source alternative to WisprFlow and Granola. Press a hotkey, speak and your words appear at your cursor, using fully offline speech-to-text models such as Whisper and NVIDIA Parakeet or cloud providers. It also transcribes meetings with speaker diarization, keeps searchable notes, offers a Voice Assistant hotkey that sends commands to GPT, Claude, Gemini or local models, and has a public API and MCP server.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to dictate into any app with private, offline speech-to-text with Openwhispr

Repo: [OpenWhispr/openwhispr](https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 10 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install OpenWhispr, pick a local model and dictate anywhere with a global hotkey.

**Who it is for:** A writer or developer who types all day and wants voice input that never leaves the machine.

**The problem:** Popular dictation apps are subscriptions that send your audio to the cloud.

**The outcome:** Your speech pasted at the cursor in any app, transcribed locally with no telemetry.

### Steps

1. Download the app for your platform, or on macOS run `brew install --cask openwhispr`
2. Choose a local speech-to-text model such as Whisper or NVIDIA Parakeet
3. Set your global dictation hotkey
4. Press the hotkey, speak, and the text appears at your cursor
5. Use the dictation translation hotkey to speak in one language and paste in another

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Help me set up OpenWhispr/openwhispr for offline dictation on <OS>: recommend a local model for my hardware, set a hotkey, and give me a quick test routine to compare accuracy with a cloud model.
```

## How to transcribe Zoom and Teams meetings with speaker labels with Openwhispr

Repo: [OpenWhispr/openwhispr](https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Let OpenWhispr detect calls, transcribe them with local speaker diarization and save searchable notes.

**Who it is for:** A manager or consultant who wants Granola style meeting notes without sending recordings to a vendor.

**The problem:** Meeting note tools are paid and upload your calls, which some clients and companies will not allow.

**The outcome:** Meeting transcripts with speaker labels and voice fingerprints, stored as searchable notes.

### Steps

1. Install OpenWhispr
2. Connect Google, Microsoft or Apple Calendar so calls are detected
3. Join a Zoom, Teams or FaceTime call and let it transcribe with live speaker diarization
4. Find the transcript in Notes and use semantic search or AI actions
5. Import older recordings with audio import

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using OpenWhispr/openwhispr, set up meeting transcription with local speaker diarization for my <calendar> calls, then after my next meeting summarize the transcript into decisions and action items per speaker.
```

### Caveat

Tell participants they are being transcribed and follow local consent laws. On Intel Macs, live speaker identification and voice fingerprinting are unavailable.

## How to give your AI assistant access to your voice notes over MCP with Openwhispr

Repo: [OpenWhispr/openwhispr](https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect OpenWhispr's MCP server or public API so an assistant can manage notes and transcriptions.

**Who it is for:** A developer who wants Claude or another assistant to search and organize dictated notes.

**The problem:** Voice notes pile up in an app your assistant cannot see.

**The outcome:** An assistant that can read, search and manage your OpenWhispr notes and transcriptions.

### Steps

1. Run OpenWhispr from the app, or from source with `git clone https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr.git`, `npm install` and `npm run dev`
2. Follow the MCP server setup in the docs to connect your assistant
3. Or use the public API to manage notes and transcriptions from scripts
4. Ask the assistant to search notes or file new transcriptions into folders
5. Use the Voice Assistant hotkey to send spoken commands directly

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect OpenWhispr/openwhispr's MCP server to my assistant, then find all notes from the last week that mention <topic>, summarize them and file the summary into a new folder.
```
