# AI use cases for Pulse (qunqin24/Pulse)

Repo: [qunqin24/Pulse](https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/qunqin24-pulse/

Pulse is a free, open-source macOS app that shows how much of each AI coding tool's usage limit you have left, as rings on the edge of the screen.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to see remaining limits for all your AI coding tools with Pulse

Repo: [qunqin24/Pulse](https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Put one ring per AI coding service on the screen edge and read what is left without opening usage pages.

**Who it is for:** A developer who uses Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar tools daily and keeps getting surprised by rate limits mid-task.

**The problem:** Each AI coding service has its own usage page, so checking limits means opening several sites and logging in to each one.

**The outcome:** Every monitored service shows its usage as a ring, with the percentage the service itself reported and the reset time for each limit.

### Steps

1. Download the latest Pulse-x.y.z.dmg from the Releases page of github.com/qunqin24/Pulse.
2. Open the disk image and drag Pulse into your Applications folder.
3. If macOS blocks the first launch, open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway. Or run `xattr -cr /Applications/Pulse.app` in Terminal.
4. On first launch, tick the services you want to monitor in the chooser, then click Done. Nothing is checked until you click Done.
5. Point at a ring to see every limit and its reset on one card.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install Pulse from https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse by downloading the latest Pulse-x.y.z.dmg from Releases into <download-folder> and moving Pulse.app to /Applications. Confirm that /Applications/Pulse.app exists and report its version. Verify the app launches and that the service chooser appears on first run.
```

### Caveat

Pulse only reports what each service returns, and services that report nothing are shown as such rather than estimated.

Risk, credentials: Pulse reads the logins you already have on your Mac to check usage, so only enable services on a Mac you control.

## How to get warned before a rate limit stops your coding with Pulse

Repo: [qunqin24/Pulse](https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Set notifications for limit thresholds and use the burn-rate forecast to plan the rest of a session.

**Who it is for:** A developer running long agent sessions who needs to know whether the current pace will run out before the limit window resets.

**The problem:** A tool can hit its usage limit in the middle of a long task, which stops work and forces a wait for the reset.

**The outcome:** Pulse notifies you when a limit crosses a line you chose, and the burn-rate forecast shows whether your pace will run out before the window does.

### Steps

1. Open Pulse and choose Settings from the menu bar, or right-click the floating rail and choose Settings.
2. Under notifications, select the events you want, such as a limit crossing a line or a service reset.
3. Hover over a ring to open its detailed card and check the burn-rate forecast.
4. Keep the ring on a visible edge or in the menu bar while you work so the fullest limit stays in view.
5. When a warning appears, switch to a lighter task or wait for the reset before starting a large run.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the Pulse app from https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse, enable limit-threshold notifications for <service-name>. Confirm the threshold setting is saved and report the burn-rate forecast shown on that service's detailed card.
```

### Caveat

Notifications and the forecast depend on the usage data each service provides, so a service that reports no usage cannot be forecast.

## How to review AI token spend across local clients by day with Pulse

Repo: [qunqin24/Pulse](https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Chart token use by day, model and agent over any span, priced at public API rates, and share a recap.

**Who it is for:** A developer or team lead who wants to understand what AI coding tools cost across a week or month.

**The problem:** Token use is spread across many local AI clients, and there is no single view of what it would cost at API rates.

**The outcome:** A spend view grouped by day, model and agent, in your chosen currency, plus a shareable recap card for a day, week, month or year.

### Steps

1. Open Pulse and go to the token spend view in its dashboard.
2. Choose the span you want to review, then group by day, model or agent.
3. Pick your currency, such as dollars, yuan or yen, to see the estimates in that currency.
4. Open a usage recap for the period and save the shareable card.
5. Compare the estimates against the limits on your rings to plan usage for the next period.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the Pulse app from https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse, open the token spend view for the last 30 days, group results by model, and report the top three models by estimated spend in <currency>. Verify that the figures are labelled as estimates priced at public API rates.
```

### Caveat

Spend figures are estimates priced at public API rates, not invoices, and they cover only the 54 local clients Pulse reads.

## How to build Pulse from source and run your own copy with Pulse

Repo: [qunqin24/Pulse](https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Clone the repo, build the app bundle with the included script, and launch it on your Mac.

**Who it is for:** A macOS developer who wants to audit the code, change the app, or run a build they compiled themselves.

**The problem:** Installing a prebuilt app means trusting a binary, and changing the code requires a working build environment.

**The outcome:** A locally built Pulse.app in build.noindex that you launched yourself, built from the public sources.

### Steps

1. Install full Xcode with the macOS 26 SDK, since the Command Line Tools alone are not enough.
2. Run `git clone https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse.git`.
3. Run `cd Pulse`.
4. Run `./Scripts/bundle.sh` to build the app bundle.
5. Run `open build.noindex/Pulse.app` to launch it. For notifications and in-app updates, use the bundled app rather than `swift run Pulse`.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone https://github.com/qunqin24/Pulse into <target-folder>, run ./Scripts/bundle.sh from inside it, and confirm that build.noindex/Pulse.app exists. Report any build errors and the final lines of the build output.
```

### Caveat

Building the current sources requires full Xcode and the macOS 26 SDK, while the built app itself runs on macOS 14 and newer.

Risk, remote script: The build step runs ./Scripts/bundle.sh from the cloned repo, so read the script before running it.
