# AI use cases for Think Term (RoversX/ThinkTerm)

Repo: [RoversX/ThinkTerm](https://github.com/RoversX/ThinkTerm) | Use cases: 4 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/roversx-thinkterm/

ThinkTerm is an open-source terminal with a built-in multiplexer, written in Rust, whose mux server keeps shells and coding agents running after the window closes.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to keep long builds and agents running after you close the window with Think Term

Repo: [RoversX/ThinkTerm](https://github.com/RoversX/ThinkTerm) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Detach from Think Term and reattach later to the same shells, builds, and agent tasks.

**Who it is for:** A developer who starts a long build or coding agent task and needs to leave the machine or close the window without losing progress.

**The problem:** Closing a normal terminal window usually ends the shells and processes running inside it, so long tasks get interrupted.

**The outcome:** The task keeps running on the mux server, and you reattach from the desktop or the TUI to see its output.

### Steps

1. Install on macOS with `brew install --cask roversx/tap/thinkterm`, or download a release from the Releases page
2. Open the desktop application with `thinkterm start`
3. Start a long build or coding agent task in a pane
4. Close the desktop window; the server-held session keeps running
5. In a separate terminal, run `thinkterm tui` to reattach and continue the same session

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the RoversX/ThinkTerm repo, start a long-running build in a pane of a ThinkTerm session on <target machine>, detach the client, then reattach with `thinkterm tui`. Expected output: the build log continues from where it was before detaching. Verify that the process is still running after the client disconnects.
```

### Caveat

Sessions survive a client disconnect, but they do not survive a mux server restart or host reboot, according to the README.

## How to let a coding agent read and drive other terminal panes with Think Term

Repo: [RoversX/ThinkTerm](https://github.com/RoversX/ThinkTerm) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the Think Term skill so an agent can send input to and read output from other panes.

**Who it is for:** A developer running a coding agent who wants it to check the output of a build or test run in another pane.

**The problem:** Coding agents cannot see the output of other terminal panes, so the developer has to copy logs back and forth by hand.

**The outcome:** The agent reads the output of the other pane and sends commands to it, using the Think Term CLI.

### Steps

1. Install the skill with `npx skills add RoversX/ThinkTerm --skill thinkterm -g`
2. Start Think Term with `thinkterm start`
3. Open a second pane running a test or build command
4. Label that pane with `set-pane-label` so the agent can address it by name
5. Ask the agent to read the pane with `thinkterm cli get-text` and send input with `thinkterm cli send-text` when needed (inferred, check the README)

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the RoversX/ThinkTerm repo, use `thinkterm cli get-text` to read the output of the pane labeled <pane label>, then summarize any failing test. Expected output: a short list of failing tests with file names. Verify that the summary matches the text returned by get-text before acting on it.
```

### Caveat

The README notes that terminal input is limited as a messaging mechanism, so agent coordination through panes is not guaranteed to be reliable.

Risk, remote script: The skill is installed with npx from a GitHub repo, so review the skill source before running the install command.

## How to watch agents on several machines from one Think Term sidebar with Think Term

Repo: [RoversX/ThinkTerm](https://github.com/RoversX/ThinkTerm) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect remote hosts through Think Term Connect and switch between them in one workspace.

**Who it is for:** An engineer who runs coding agents on a server and on a laptop and wants to see all of them in one place.

**The problem:** Agents spread across machines are hard to track, and switching between SSH windows loses context about which task is which.

**The outcome:** Remote workspaces appear in the desktop sidebar beside local work, and processes keep running on their original host.

### Steps

1. Install Think Term and start it with `thinkterm start`
2. Open Think Term Connect and add a remote host using SSH, Mosh, or a persistent mux session
3. If the server lacks Think Term, accept the offer to install it under your user account
4. Open the Agents panel to see recognized coding agents and their work status
5. Switch machines from the sidebar to return to a remote session

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the RoversX/ThinkTerm repo, connect ThinkTerm to the remote host <host name> with ThinkTerm Connect, then list the recognized agents in the Agents panel. Expected output: each agent with its project and work status. Verify that the agent processes still run on the remote host after the desktop client closes.
```

### Caveat

The README says remote connections make network requests when used, and agent detection can be disabled in settings.

Risk, credentials: The SSH host book stores passwords encrypted with a locally stored key, and anyone with both the key and the encrypted data can decrypt them.

## How to check running sessions from a browser over HTTPS with Think Term

Repo: [RoversX/ThinkTerm](https://github.com/RoversX/ThinkTerm) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Enable the browser listener and use an access token to reach your sessions from another device.

**Who it is for:** A developer away from their main machine who wants to glance at a running build or agent from a browser.

**The problem:** Without a way to reach the running session, checking progress means waiting until you return to the machine.

**The outcome:** You open the Think Term web client in a browser and see the same server-held sessions.

### Steps

1. Start Think Term and open Settings and then Web
2. Enable the listener and create an access token for the browser
3. Serve connections away from loopback over HTTPS, as the default requires
4. Open the web client in a browser that supports WebGPU in a secure context
5. Use the token to attach to the sessions and check progress

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the RoversX/ThinkTerm repo, enable the browser listener in Settings and then Web, create an access token, and open the web client from <device>. Expected output: the list of running sessions on the mux server. Verify that the browser shows the same sessions as the desktop app.
```

### Caveat

The browser client requires WebGPU and a secure browser context, and browser access must be enabled explicitly, according to the README.

Risk, credentials: A browser access token grants access to the server's terminal sessions, so treat it as a credential and do not share it.
