Pentest Harness is a self-hosted, open-source AI agent workspace for authorized security testing that runs with your own AI model API key.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to run an authorized pentest workspace on your own machine with Pentest Harness

Repo: [S1N6H/pentest-harness](https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start a local AI agent workspace in Pentest Mode for an authorized engagement.

**Who it is for:** A penetration tester who has a signed scope for a client engagement and wants an AI agent workspace that keeps session data local.

**The problem:** Engagement notes, commands, and AI conversations need a dedicated workspace that the tester controls, not a generic chat tab.

**The outcome:** A running Web UI at http://127.0.0.1:2323 with Pentest Mode available for the engagement.

### Steps

1. Clone the repository with `git clone https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness.git`.
2. Enter the folder with `cd pentest-harness` and install dependencies with `pnpm install`.
3. Build the project with `pnpm build`.
4. Start the Web UI with `pnpm dsh web` and open http://127.0.0.1:2323 in your browser.
5. Open Settings, then Models, connect your AI provider, and pick a model in the composer before starting the engagement.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness, run `pnpm install`, `pnpm build`, and `pnpm dsh web`, then confirm http://127.0.0.1:2323 returns a page. Report the URL and the output of the start command. Only use this workspace against <target> after written authorization for that target is confirmed.
```

### Caveat

The README does not describe which targets or actions Pentest Mode permits, so the authorization check stays with you.

Risk, credentials: Your provider API key is entered into the app, so keep the local credential store owner-only and never paste the key into shared logs or settings files.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.

Disclaimer: Third-party repos we don't own or vouch for. AI-generated use cases can be wrong: review everything and run at your own risk. Full text: https://dedupedai.com/disclaimer/

## How to work through CTF challenges and security labs with an AI agent with Pentest Harness

Repo: [S1N6H/pentest-harness](https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use a local agent workspace to solve CTF and lab challenges with your chosen model.

**Who it is for:** A student or hobbyist who plays CTF events or runs security lab exercises and wants an AI assistant that remembers progress across sessions.

**The problem:** Long CTF or lab sessions lose context, and restarting the work costs time and momentum.

**The outcome:** A durable session you can stop and reopen, with the agent continuing from the saved replay.

### Steps

1. Clone the repository with `git clone https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness.git` and enter the folder with `cd pentest-harness`.
2. Install with `pnpm install` and build with `pnpm build`.
3. Start the workspace with `pnpm dsh web` and open http://127.0.0.1:2323.
4. Add a provider under Settings, then Models, and select a model in the composer.
5. Start a session for the challenge, and reopen it later to resume from the saved replay.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness, run `pnpm install && pnpm build`, then start the Web UI with `pnpm dsh web`. Open a session for the CTF challenge at <target> and confirm the session can be reopened after a restart. Report the session identifier and whether the replay restored.
```

### Caveat

The README names CTFs and security labs as intended use, but it does not list any challenge platform integrations, so you connect targets yourself.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.

## How to switch between AI providers and models during a long engagement with Pentest Harness

Repo: [S1N6H/pentest-harness](https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Enable, test, and swap model providers from Settings without leaving the workspace.

**Who it is for:** A security researcher who wants to test different AI models on the same kind of task and keep the best one for a multi-day engagement.

**The problem:** Switching model vendors usually means changing tools or accounts, which breaks the flow of an engagement.

**The outcome:** Several providers configured, tested with live connection checks, and enabled or disabled as needed.

### Steps

1. Start the workspace with `pnpm dsh web` after running `pnpm install` and `pnpm build`.
2. Open Settings, then Models, and click Add a custom provider.
3. Paste your API base URL and enter your API key, which is stored in your local credential store.
4. Use the provider card to run a live connection test and review the per-model context badges.
5. Turn providers on or off with the toggles and pick the model you want in the composer.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the repo https://github.com/S1N6H/pentest-harness, start the Web UI with `pnpm dsh web` and add the provider at <base_url> under Settings, then Models. Confirm the live connection test passes and the models auto-discover. Report the provider name and the number of discovered models.
```

### Caveat

The README does not state which providers have been tested with the workspace, so verify each connection with the built-in test before relying on it.

Risk, credentials: Each provider key you add is stored in the owner-only credential store as a reference, so rotate or remove keys there when you stop using a provider.

Dual-use notice: only use this on software, sites and systems you own or are authorized to test.
