## How to install an ad-free home screen on Google TV with Claude Code with Free My TV

Repo: [simbasjungles/free-my-tv](https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Let Claude Code build Free My TV and install it on a Google TV or Android TV in about ten minutes.

**Who it is for:** A household member with a Google TV or Android TV who is tired of sponsored rows and banners on the home screen and can follow simple setup steps.

**The problem:** The stock home screen shows ads, sponsored rows and autoplaying promos, and the TV's default setup is hard to change without tools.

**The outcome:** Free My TV becomes the home screen, shows trending picks from your own apps and the weather, and the stock home screen can be restored with one button.

### Steps

1. On the TV, turn on developer mode: Settings → System → About → press Android TV OS build 7 times, then Settings → System → Developer options → turn on USB debugging. Write down the TV's IP address from Settings → Network & Internet.
2. On your computer, run `git clone https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv && cd free-my-tv`
3. Open Claude Code in that folder and say: Install Free My TV on my TV at 192.168.1.50. I live in Lisbon. Swap in your TV's IP and your city.
4. Let Claude Code install the tools, build the app and put it on the TV.
5. On the TV, open Free My TV → Home Screen → Free My TV, and accept the debugging prompt (tick Always allow).

```text
In the free-my-tv repo, install Free My TV on the TV at <TV_IP> for the city <CITY>, following the Install section of README.md. Expected output: the app is built as FreeMyTV.apk and installed on the TV with adb. Verify by checking that the TV's Home Screen setting offers Free My TV after the install.
```

### Caveat

The TV must have USB debugging turned on and the computer must stay on the same Wi-Fi during setup, and the README says it does not listen to the network once installed.

## How to put Free My TV on an LG TV through webOS Developer Mode with Free My TV

Repo: [simbasjungles/free-my-tv](https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the Free My TV app on an LG webOS TV using LG's own Developer Mode and the included Python scripts.

**Who it is for:** An LG TV owner with a computer and Python 3 who wants the same ad-free home screen on webOS.

**The problem:** LG's home screen shows its own promotions, and an LG TV needs developer tools before a custom app can be installed.

**The outcome:** Free My TV is installed as an LG app, and a number key on the remote opens it from anywhere.

### Steps

1. On the TV, open the LG Content Store and install Developer Mode. Sign in with a free LG developer account, turn on Dev Mode Status (the TV restarts), then turn on Key Server. Write down the IP address and the passphrase it shows.
2. On your computer, run `git clone https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv && cd free-my-tv`
3. Build the app with `python3 webos/build.py` after setting your city and TMDB key in config.properties.
4. Install with `python3 webos/install.py 192.168.1.50`. The first time, enter the TV's passphrase when asked; updates don't ask again.
5. On the TV, while Free My TV is open, hold a number key on the remote to assign it.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the free-my-tv repo, build the LG version with `python3 webos/build.py` and prepare the install for the LG TV at <TV_IP>. Expected output: a built webOS package and the install command ready to run, with the passphrase left for the user to type. Verify that webos/install.py exists and that the build finished without errors.
```

### Caveat

Developer Mode on LG lasts about 40 days, so the app stops opening unless you open the Developer Mode app and press EXTEND.

## How to adapt Free My TV to a different TV brand with an AI agent with Free My TV

Repo: [simbasjungles/free-my-tv](https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have an AI agent read a non-listed TV, update the app's debloat and shelf lists, and walk through a test.

**Who it is for:** A person with a Google TV or Android TV from a brand the README does not cover, who knows how to open a folder in Claude Code.

**The problem:** Each TV brand ships its own promo apps and home screen, so the default lists do not match every model.

**The outcome:** The app's lists match the user's TV, with promo apps turned off and the live TV app set for that brand.

### Steps

1. Clone the repo with `git clone https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv && cd free-my-tv` and open the folder in Claude Code.
2. Say: set it up for my Sony (or your brand). Let the agent read the TV, find its home screen and its promo apps.
3. Review the proposed changes to DEBLOAT and PROTECTED in app/src/io/freemytv/HomeMode.java, and SHELF and LIVE_TV_APPS in app/src/io/freemytv/HomeApps.java.
4. Build with `./build.sh` and install with `adb install -r FreeMyTV.apk`.
5. Walk through the test the agent gives you, and confirm that picture, sound, inputs and remote pairing still work.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the free-my-tv repo, read CLAUDE.md and update the DEBLOAT, PROTECTED, SHELF and LIVE_TV_APPS lists for the TV brand <BRAND> at <TV_IP>. Expected output: edited lists in HomeMode.java and HomeApps.java and a built FreeMyTV.apk. Verify that no picture, sound, input, remote, Google service or Play Store package appears in DEBLOAT.
```

### Caveat

Editing the debloat lists is the risky part, so the agent must keep picture, sound, inputs, remote pairing, Google services and the Play Store on the protected list.

## How to set up trending picks, weather and prices with your own TMDB key with Free My TV

Repo: [simbasjungles/free-my-tv](https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Build Free My TV with your city, your TMDB key and your currency so the picks and cards fit your home.

**Who it is for:** A Google TV or Android TV owner who wants trending movie and show picks from their own apps, a local forecast and crypto prices on the home screen.

**The problem:** The picks and cards need a city, a country and a free TMDB key to show what is trending for the viewer.

**The outcome:** The home screen shows picks for your country, the weather for your city, sunrise and sunset, and crypto prices in your currency.

### Steps

1. Create a free account at themoviedb.org, then open Settings → API and request a developer key. Copy the API Read Access Token.
2. Run `./build.sh` once to create config.properties, then set latitude, longitude, city, tmdb_region and tmdb_key in it.
3. Set currency (for example EUR) and temperature in config.properties if you want them changed.
4. Run `./build.sh` again to rebuild the app.
5. Install with `adb connect 192.168.1.50:5555` and `adb install -r FreeMyTV.apk`.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the free-my-tv repo, create config.properties by running ./build.sh, then set my city to <CITY>, tmdb_region to <COUNTRY_CODE> and currency to <CURRENCY>. Expected output: a rebuilt FreeMyTV.apk. Verify that config.properties stays out of git and that the build completes.
```

### Caveat

The README says the picks come only from apps you already have and that the TMDB key is required for them, so the picks stay empty until you add a key.

Risk, credentials: Your TMDB key is stored in config.properties, so keep that file out of git and do not share it, since the README says it is your key.
