# AI use cases for Sim (simstudioai/sim)

Repo: [simstudioai/sim](https://github.com/simstudioai/sim) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/simstudioai-sim/

Sim is a workspace to build, deploy and monitor AI agents and workflows, visually, conversationally or with code. It connects 270+ integrations and every major LLM, has built-in tables, files and knowledge bases, exposes an MCP server, and can be self-hosted with the npx sim-setup wizard on Docker Compose.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to self-host an AI agent workflow builder with Sim

Repo: [simstudioai/sim](https://github.com/simstudioai/sim) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the setup wizard to get the whole Sim stack on your own machine with Docker Compose, then build agents in the browser.

**Who it is for:** An ops or platform engineer who wants agent workflows without sending data to a hosted service.

**The problem:** Cloud workflow tools keep your data and credentials on someone else's servers.

**The outcome:** Sim running at localhost:3000 with its database, secrets and Chat API key configured.

### Steps

1. Make sure Node.js 20+ and Docker are installed
2. Run `npx sim-setup`, which creates a sim/ deployment directory, provisions the database, generates secrets and writes .env
3. Open http://localhost:3000 when the wizard finishes
4. Check health with `npx sim-setup status` and diagnose problems with `npx sim-setup doctor`

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using simstudioai/sim, self-host it with `npx sim-setup` on this machine, then confirm it is healthy with `npx sim-setup status` and tell me the URL to open.
```

### Caveat

The wizard does not clone the repository; source-only local development and Kubernetes modes need `bun run sim-setup` inside a clone.

Risk, credentials: The wizard writes generated secrets and your Chat API key into .env; keep that directory private and out of version control.

## How to add Slack and a knowledge base to your Sim install with Sim

Repo: [simstudioai/sim](https://github.com/simstudioai/sim) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Switch on optional capabilities one at a time so agents can post to Slack and answer from your documents.

**Who it is for:** A team lead automating internal questions and notifications.

**The problem:** Rerunning a full setup for each new integration is slow and risky.

**The outcome:** A Sim install with Slack integration and knowledge enabled, verified by the config report.

### Steps

1. From your install directory run `npx sim-setup add integration slack`
2. Enable knowledge bases with `npx sim-setup add knowledge`
3. Add or change a model provider with `npx sim-setup add llm`
4. Run `npx sim-setup config` to see configured, missing or invalid capabilities without printing credential values

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In my simstudioai/sim install, run `npx sim-setup add integration slack` and `npx sim-setup add knowledge`, then `npx sim-setup config`, and summarize what is configured and what is still missing.
```

### Caveat

Keep the install current with `npx sim-setup update`, which pulls and applies the Compose images.

Risk, permissions: A Slack integration lets agent workflows post in your workspace, so scope the bot to the channels it needs.

## How to run and deploy Sim workflows from your coding agent with Sim

Repo: [simstudioai/sim](https://github.com/simstudioai/sim) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect Claude Code or Codex to the Sim MCP server so your agent can manage workspaces and run workflows for you.

**Who it is for:** A developer who lives in a coding agent and wants it to trigger business workflows.

**The problem:** Switching to a web UI to run or check a workflow breaks flow.

**The outcome:** A coding agent that can run and deploy workflows and read tables, knowledge bases, files and logs.

### Steps

1. For Claude Code run `claude mcp add --transport http sim https://mcp.sim.ai/mcp`, then open /mcp to sign in
2. For Codex run `codex mcp add sim --url https://mcp.sim.ai/mcp`
3. Sign in with OAuth or use an API key
4. Ask your agent to list workspaces and run a workflow

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect my Claude Code to simstudioai/sim with `claude mcp add --transport http sim https://mcp.sim.ai/mcp`, then list my workspaces and run <workflow name>, reporting the result.
```

### Caveat

The URL shown connects to Sim Cloud; the README says self-hosted URLs are in the MCP docs.

Risk, permissions: The connected agent can deploy workflows and change tables and files in your workspace, so review what it plans before letting it act.
