# AI use cases for Skillmd (skillmds/skillmd)

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Use cases: 5 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/skillmds-skillmd/

SkillMD is an open-source toolchain (CLI, MCP server, GitHub Action and lint engine) for searching, installing, linting and publishing Agent Skills (SKILL.md files) across many coding agents.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to lint a SKILL.md file before you share it with Skillmd

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the same checks the registry uses and fix format problems before a skill goes public.

**Who it is for:** A skill author who has written a new SKILL.md and wants to confirm it follows the format before sharing it with teammates or the registry.

**The problem:** Format mistakes in frontmatter or instructions can make a skill fail to load or fail publish checks, and the author has no quick way to see them.

**The outcome:** A list of diagnostics, a 0 to 100 quality score, and optional automatic fixes for mechanical issues.

### Steps

1. Install the tools with `npm i -g skillmds`, or skip the install and use the `npx` form below.
2. Run `npx skillmds lint ./my-skill` on the folder that contains your SKILL.md.
3. Read the diagnostics and quality score, then run `skillmd lint . --fix` to apply the mechanical fixes. (inferred, check the README)
4. Run `skillmd lint . --strict` so warnings also fail the check before you share the skill.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the skillmds repo to lint the skill at <path-to-skill-folder> by running `skillmd lint <path-to-skill-folder>`. Return the diagnostics and the 0 to 100 quality score. Verify that the command exits without errors before reporting the result.
```

### Caveat

The lint engine checks the SKILL.md format and rules only; the README does not say it judges whether the skill's instructions are good or correct.

## How to check every skill in a repo on each pull request with Skillmd

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Add a GitHub Action that lints all skills and posts results to GitHub Code Scanning.

**Who it is for:** A maintainer of a git repository full of skills who wants broken skills caught in pull requests before merge.

**The problem:** Skills in a shared repo can drift from the format, and reviewers may not notice formatting or safety issues in each change.

**The outcome:** Every pull request shows lint findings from GitHub Code Scanning, so problems are visible during review.

### Steps

1. Create a workflow file in your repo, such as `.github/workflows/skillmd.yml`.
2. Add a job step with `uses: skillmds/skillmd/action@v1` and set `with: path: .` to scan the whole repo. (inferred, check the README)
3. Give the job permission to upload SARIF results so Code Scanning accepts them, following the full example in examples/github-action.yml. (inferred, check the README)
4. Open a pull request that changes a SKILL.md file and check the Code Scanning results on that pull request.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Add the skillmds/skillmd/action@v1 step with path set to '.' to the CI workflow in <repo-path>, using examples/github-action.yml from the skillmds repo as the template. Confirm the workflow file is valid YAML and report which skills the action lints.
```

### Caveat

The README says the action uploads results to GitHub Code Scanning but does not list the exact permissions the workflow needs, so check examples/github-action.yml for the required settings.

## How to find a skill and install it into every local agent with Skillmd

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Search the registry from the terminal and install a skill into each detected agent.

**Who it is for:** A developer using several coding agents who wants a ready-made skill for a task such as working with PDFs.

**The problem:** Each agent keeps skills in its own folder, so installing the same skill by hand for every agent is slow and error-prone.

**The outcome:** The skill is written into each detected agent's skills directory, after linting, with no scripts run.

### Steps

1. Run `npx skillmds search "pdf"` to list matching skills in the registry.
2. Run `npx skillmds add anthropic/pdf` to install the chosen skill.
3. Check the agent directories it wrote to, such as `.claude/skills/` or `.cursor/skills/`.
4. Run `skillmd list` to confirm the skill is installed across your agents.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the skillmds CLI from the skillmds repo to search the registry for <search-term>, then install <owner/skill> with `npx skillmds add <owner/skill>`. Report which agent directories received the skill and verify the files exist there.
```

### Caveat

The README says add detects 68 agents by their config directories, so skills only land in agents that the CLI detects on your machine.

## How to let your coding agent search and install skills mid-task with Skillmd

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect the skillmds MCP server so an agent can search, inspect, lint and install skills itself.

**Who it is for:** A developer working in Claude Code or Cursor who wants the agent to find and add a skill for a task without leaving the conversation.

**The problem:** Looking up and installing skills by hand breaks the flow of a coding session, and the agent cannot check a skill on its own.

**The outcome:** The agent can call skillmd_search, skillmd_get, skillmd_lint and skillmd_install from inside the conversation.

### Steps

1. In Claude Code, run `claude mcp add skillmd -- npx -y skillmds`.
2. For Cursor or another MCP client, add the `mcpServers` entry from examples/mcp/ with the command `npx` and args `-y skillmds`.
3. Restart the client so it loads the new MCP server. (inferred, check the README)
4. Ask the agent to search for a skill, and confirm it calls skillmd_search and then skillmd_install.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect the skillmds MCP server from the skillmds repo to <client-name> using `npx -y skillmds`. Ask it to search the registry for <topic> and to lint the result with skillmd_lint. Report the skill it chose and confirm the install returned without running scripts.
```

### Caveat

The README lists a hosted remote server at https://api.skillmd.com/mcp as an alternative to the local npx install, but it does not say which MCP clients it supports.

## How to publish a linted skill to Skillmd.com with Skillmd

Repo: [skillmds/skillmd](https://github.com/skillmds/skillmd) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Dry-run and publish a skill to the registry, with publishing blocked on lint errors.

**Who it is for:** A skill author who has a finished skill and wants other people to find and install it from Skillmd.com.

**The problem:** Publishing a skill that fails format checks would put a broken skill in front of users, and the author needs to check before going live.

**The outcome:** The skill gets a registry page with a safety verdict, an install command for every agent, and a README badge.

### Steps

1. Run `skillmd login` and paste the token from your Skillmd.com account.
2. Run `skillmd lint ./my-skill` and fix any errors it reports. (inferred, check the README)
3. Run `skillmd publish ./my-skill --dry-run` to preview the publish without sending it.
4. Run `skillmd publish ./my-skill` to publish, then open the new skill page on Skillmd.com.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use the skillmds CLI from the skillmds repo to lint <path-to-skill> and then run `skillmd publish <path-to-skill> --dry-run`. Report any lint errors and the dry-run output. Verify that the dry run succeeds before running the real publish.
```

### Caveat

The README says publishing is blocked on lint errors and runs the same lint and scan as the CLI, but it does not state the account requirements beyond the token.

Risk, credentials: Publishing needs a Skillmd.com token from your account, so keep that token private and do not paste it into shared logs or agent prompts.
