# AI use cases for PhotoCraft (storytold/photocraft)

Repo: [storytold/photocraft](https://github.com/storytold/photocraft) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/storytold-photocraft/

PhotoCraft is an open-source, clean-room photo editor in pure Rust modeled on Photoshop: layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors, brushes and real PSD files, offline. Every menu item and tool runs one of 500+ commands, so the same engine can be driven from the UI, a headless CLI, a JSON control channel or an MCP server. The README says it is early alpha and not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to open, edit and save PSD files without Photoshop with PhotoCraft

Repo: [storytold/photocraft](https://github.com/storytold/photocraft) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 10 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install PhotoCraft and work on layered PSDs with familiar menus and shortcuts.

**Who it is for:** Someone who receives PSDs but does not pay for Photoshop.

**The problem:** Layered PSD files usually need a paid subscription to edit properly.

**The outcome:** Edited PSDs that keep layers, styles and type, saved back to PSD or exported.

### Steps

1. Download PhotoCraft from its page on getartcraft.com, or build it from source with Rust (cargo run --release -p PhotoCraft)
2. Open a PSD; menus, panels and shortcuts follow Photoshop
3. Edit layers, masks, adjustment layers and type
4. Save as PSD or export to PNG, JPEG, TIFF or WebP

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Help me install storytold/photocraft and open <file.psd>. List any layers or effects it warns it cannot model, then export a PNG.
```

### Caveat

Early alpha: re-saved files are not byte-identical, and some tools and generative features are missing.

## How to batch-grade a folder of images from the command line with PhotoCraft

Repo: [storytold/photocraft](https://github.com/storytold/photocraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Apply one action list to every image in a folder, headless.

**Who it is for:** A photographer or developer with hundreds of images to process the same way.

**The problem:** Doing the same edits by hand on every image is slow.

**The outcome:** A folder of graded images produced by one CLI command.

### Steps

1. Write an action list such as grade.json
2. Run photocraft-cli batch --actions grade.json --in ./raw --out ./graded
3. For one file, chain commands with photocraft-cli run and --cmd steps, then --out
4. See options with photocraft-cli batch --help

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using storytold/photocraft's CLI, write a grade.json action list that applies <edits>, run it over ./raw into ./graded, and spot-check three outputs.
```

## How to let an AI agent edit images through PhotoCraft's MCP server with PhotoCraft

Repo: [storytold/photocraft](https://github.com/storytold/photocraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Start the MCP server so an agent can run the same commands you click.

**Who it is for:** Someone who wants to describe an edit in words and have an agent carry it out.

**The problem:** AI image tools regenerate pictures instead of making precise, layered edits.

**The outcome:** An agent applying real, layered edits through PhotoCraft commands.

### Steps

1. Install the PhotoCraft CLI
2. Start the server with photocraft-cli mcp (headless, or bridged to the running app)
3. Add it to your MCP client
4. Ask the agent for a specific edit and review the layers it created

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Connect storytold/photocraft's MCP server (photocraft-cli mcp) to my agent and apply <edit> to <image> as non-destructive adjustment layers. List the commands it ran.
```
