# AI use cases for Fieldcraft (tangency-labs/fieldcraft)

Repo: [tangency-labs/fieldcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/fieldcraft) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/tangency-labs-fieldcraft/

FieldCraft is an open-source, pure Rust finite element and CFD application that meshes parametric parts and solves structural, thermal and fluid problems, with a CLI and MCP server for AI agents.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to solve a ready-made bracket analysis in minutes with Fieldcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/fieldcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/fieldcraft) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Open a bundled sample, press Solve and read the von Mises stress on a hex-meshed bracket.

**Who it is for:** A mechanical engineer or student who needs to see how FieldCraft meshes and solves a real part without writing any code.

**The problem:** Setting up a finite element model from scratch takes time before any result appears, and a new user cannot tell whether the tool works.

**The outcome:** The user sees a solved stress contour on the hex-meshed bracket and can compare it with the sample's stated check against a reference solution.

### Steps

1. Download the package for your system from the latest release, using the links in the Download section.
2. Open FieldCraft, then choose File, then Samples, and pick Hex-meshed bracket (bracket-hex).
3. Press Solve and wait for the analysis to finish; the sample is designed to solve within half a minute.
4. Read the von Mises stress contour in the viewport and check the result against the sample description in docs/examples.md.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the FieldCraft repo at tangency-labs/fieldcraft, run the sample named bracket-hex with `fieldcraft --sample bracket-hex`, solve it, and report the peak von Mises stress and the reference check described in docs/examples.md. Verify that the solve finished without errors before reporting the value.
```

### Caveat

The README says the viewport does not draw flow results yet, so the flow-past sample shows its drag and face forces without a picture.

## How to have an AI agent mesh and solve a beam over MCP with Fieldcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/fieldcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/fieldcraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect Claude Code to FieldCraft so it opens a part, meshes, solves and checks tip deflection.

**Who it is for:** An engineer who wants an AI agent to run repeatable structural checks on a part and report whether the result matches beam theory.

**The problem:** Running a full mesh, material, load and solve sequence by hand for each variant of a part is slow and easy to get wrong.

**The outcome:** The agent drives FieldCraft through its MCP server and returns a tip deflection that the user can compare with the beam theory value.

### Steps

1. Build or unpack the fieldcraft-cli binary, then note its full path.
2. Register the server with Claude Code using `claude mcp add fieldcraft -- /path/to/fieldcraft-cli mcp`.
3. Read docs/mcp.md in the repo to see which tools the server exposes and how they are called.
4. Ask the agent to open the part, hex mesh it, define the material, clamp and load, solve, and report the tip deflection.
5. Compare the reported deflection with the beam theory value the agent computes, and check the difference is small.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the FieldCraft repo at tangency-labs/fieldcraft, connect to its MCP server with `fieldcraft-cli mcp`, open the I-beam part at <part-path>, hex mesh it, apply a clamp and a 1000 N tip load, and solve. Report the tip deflection in mm and the beam theory value with shear, and verify the two values agree within a small tolerance before answering.
```

### Caveat

The MCP walkthrough in the README is a demo session with shortened waits, so a real run may take longer and the part path must be supplied by the user.

## How to check thermal stress in a heated steel bracket with Fieldcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/fieldcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/fieldcraft) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 15 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run the heated-bracket sample to see steady heat flow and the stress it causes.

**Who it is for:** A design engineer checking whether a clamped metal part can take heat at one end without overstressing.

**The problem:** Heat applied to one end of a constrained part creates stress that is hard to estimate by hand.

**The outcome:** The user gets a steady temperature field and the thermal stress in the bracket from one coupled run.

### Steps

1. Download FieldCraft from the latest release or open the browser version at tangency-labs.github.io/fieldcraft.
2. Choose File, then Samples, and open Heated bracket (heated-bracket).
3. Press Solve and let the steady heat and thermal stress run finish.
4. Inspect the temperature and stress contours, and read the check description in docs/examples.md.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the FieldCraft repo at tangency-labs/fieldcraft, run the heated-bracket sample with `fieldcraft --sample heated-bracket` and solve it. Report the peak temperature and peak thermal stress, and verify the stress results against the reference described in docs/examples.md before reporting.
```

### Caveat

The sample is a single steel bracket with fixed boundary conditions, so results apply to that setup and not to other materials or loads without a new model.
