# AI use cases for Solidcraft (tangency-labs/solidcraft)

Repo: [tangency-labs/solidcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/tangency-labs-solidcraft/

SolidCraft is an open-source parametric 3D CAD application written in pure Rust, with desktop, browser, headless CLI and MCP server versions.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to have an AI agent model a part through SolidCraft MCP with Solidcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/solidcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Connect Claude Code to the SolidCraft MCP server so an agent builds and edits a parametric design.

**Who it is for:** A mechanical designer or hobbyist who already has a written part spec and wants an AI agent to draft the model.

**The problem:** Modelling every feature and dimension by hand is slow when the spec is already written down.

**The outcome:** A parametric design the agent built through MCP, which you can open, inspect and change in SolidCraft.

### Steps

1. Build SolidCraft from source with Rust, or install a desktop build from the downloads page.
2. Run `cargo run --release -p solidcraft-cli -- commands` to list the command registry the agent can call.
3. Register the server with `claude mcp add solidcraft -- solidcraft-cli mcp`.
4. To watch the agent work in the running app, start the server with `solidcraft-cli mcp --connect`. (inferred, check the README)
5. Ask Claude Code for the part, then check the feature timeline and Parameters in the app.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the SolidCraft MCP server from the tangency-labs/solidcraft repo, model <part description> as a parametric design with named dimensions. Expected output: a design with a feature timeline and a list of parameters. Verify by changing one parameter and confirming the model rebuilds.
```

### Caveat

The README gives the --connect flag only in prose, so check the exact syntax in docs/mcp.md before relying on it.

## How to run a JSON script to export a bracket as STEP with Solidcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/solidcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the headless CLI to run a script and write a STEP file without opening the app.

**Who it is for:** An engineer or pipeline owner who needs the same part regenerated on demand whenever a spec changes.

**The problem:** Rebuilding a part by hand each time a value changes wastes time and invites mistakes.

**The outcome:** A bracket.step file produced from a versioned JSON script that can be rerun.

### Steps

1. Clone the repo from github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft and install Rust.
2. Check the available commands with `cargo run --release -p solidcraft-cli -- commands`.
3. Run the example script with `cargo run --release -p solidcraft-cli -- run examples/bracket.json --out bracket.step`.
4. Open bracket.step in any tool that reads STEP files to confirm the geometry.
5. Copy examples/bracket.json, change a value in the copy, and rerun the command with a new output name.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the tangency-labs/solidcraft repo, run examples/bracket.json with solidcraft-cli and write <output-file>.step. Expected output: a STEP file at that path. Verify the file exists, is not empty, and that the command exits without errors.
```

### Caveat

The README describes the script format but does not describe the geometry the bracket example produces, so check the output yourself.

## How to design an enclosure whose height updates from Parameters with Solidcraft

Repo: [tangency-labs/solidcraft](https://github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Model a case in the desktop app, then change one parameter and watch the design rebuild.

**Who it is for:** A maker designing a housing for an electronics board who expects board or fit dimensions to change.

**The problem:** A fixed model has to be redrawn from scratch whenever a board or fit dimension changes.

**The outcome:** A case on a parametric timeline where one updated value rebuilds the whole design.

### Steps

1. Install on Windows with `winget install bherbruck.SolidCraft`, or use the AppImage, disk image or web app from the README links.
2. Sketch a footprint with dimensions driven by parameters, then extrude and shell it.
3. Add enclosure features such as vent slots and port cut-outs on the timeline.
4. Open Parameters and change the height value.
5. Confirm the model rebuilds with the new height.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using SolidCraft from the tangency-labs/solidcraft repo, create an enclosure for <board or part> with a named height parameter. Expected output: a shelled design with a height parameter in Parameters. Verify by changing the height and confirming the model rebuilds.
```

### Caveat

The README says the downloads are not signed yet, so Windows and macOS will show a warning the first time you run them.
