# AI use cases for OpenViking (volcengine/OpenViking)

Repo: [volcengine/OpenViking](https://github.com/volcengine/OpenViking) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/volcengine-openviking/

OpenViking is an open-source context database for AI agents that keeps knowledge, memory and skills in one virtual filesystem under viking:// paths. Directories carry generated one-sentence abstracts and overviews so agents can judge relevance before reading full files, and search can be scoped to a directory. Sessions are archived as Markdown memories you can read and edit. A memory plugin connects Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to give Claude Code, Codex or Cursor memory across sessions with OpenViking

Repo: [volcengine/OpenViking](https://github.com/volcengine/OpenViking) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install the OpenViking memory plugin so your coding agent remembers preferences and past work.

**Who it is for:** A developer tired of re-explaining project rules and preferences to their agent every session.

**The problem:** Coding agents forget everything between sessions or store memory where you cannot see it.

**The outcome:** Cross-session memory stored as files you can read, edit and search.

### Steps

1. Have an OpenViking server running (self-hosted or the hosted service)
2. Run `curl -fsSL https://openviking.ai/install | bash` and pick your tools and server when asked
3. Use a user key, not a root key
4. Restart your agent as the installer instructs, then follow the onboarding guide

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Install the volcengine/OpenViking memory plugin for <Claude Code or Codex or Cursor> against my server at <address>, walk me through onboarding, and show me where my memories are stored.
```

## How to self-host an OpenViking context server with your own models with OpenViking

Repo: [volcengine/OpenViking](https://github.com/volcengine/OpenViking) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Install OpenViking with uv and run the setup wizard to configure models.

**Who it is for:** A team that wants agent memory and knowledge on its own infrastructure.

**The problem:** Hosted memory services keep your project context on someone else's servers.

**The outcome:** An OpenViking server with ~/.openviking/ov.conf set for your chosen provider, including local Ollama.

### Steps

1. Run `uv tool install openviking --upgrade && openviking-server init`
2. Choose a model provider in the wizard: Volcengine, OpenAI, Codex OAuth, Kimi, GLM or local Ollama
3. Start the server and check it with `ov status`
4. Decide whether other machines need to reach it and whether auth is on

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Self-host volcengine/OpenViking on <machine>: install it with uv, run openviking-server init with <provider>, start it and confirm ov status works. Tell me the address and whether auth is on.
```

## How to import a repository and search it one directory at a time with OpenViking

Repo: [volcengine/OpenViking](https://github.com/volcengine/OpenViking) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 20 minutes | Basis: From the README

Add a GitHub repo as a resource and use scoped find and grep instead of a flat vector search.

**Who it is for:** An engineer who wants an agent to answer questions about a large codebase or docs set.

**The problem:** Flat vector search over everything returns noisy matches from unrelated parts of the project.

**The outcome:** The repo indexed under viking://resources with abstracts and overviews, searchable by subtree.

### Steps

1. With the server running, run `ov add-resource https://github.com/volcengine/OpenViking` (or your repo)
2. Check progress with ov task status and your task ID
3. Browse with `ov ls viking://resources/` and `ov tree viking://resources/volcengine -L 2`
4. Search with `ov find "what is openviking"` or grep inside one folder with --uri

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Use volcengine/OpenViking's ov CLI to import <repo URL>, wait for the task to finish, then answer <question> using ov find scoped to the right directory and show the URIs you used.
```
