An MCP server and skill set that lets a coding agent draw, review, animate and export pixel art directly in an Aseprite window that is already open.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to draw a pixel sprite live in your open Aseprite with Aseprite AI Artist

Repo: [with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist](https://github.com/with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have your coding agent draw a sprite in the Aseprite window you already have open.

**Who it is for:** A hobbyist or indie game developer who wants a small character or object drawn quickly and wants to watch and undo each step.

**The problem:** Drawing pixel art by hand takes time, and generated PNG files are hard to edit or trust.

**The outcome:** A sprite drawn step by step in your open Aseprite document, where each step is one Ctrl+Z, with a note from the agent on what it compromised on.

### Steps

1. Run `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist install-extension`, then quit and reopen Aseprite.
2. In Claude Code, run `/plugin marketplace add with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist` and then `/plugin install aseprite@aseprite-ai-artist`. For Codex, Gemini or Cursor, run `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist install codex` (or `gemini` or `cursor`).
3. Restart your agent, then run `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist doctor` and confirm all checks show a tick.
4. Ask your agent for a sprite, for example `/aseprite:studio a fox, 32×32, sleeping loop` in Claude Code.
5. Watch the drawing in Aseprite, and use Ctrl+Z or a written request to change anything you don't like.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the MCP server from with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist, draw a <subject, for example a 32x32 knight> in the Aseprite window that is already open. Expected output: the sprite appears in the open Aseprite document, and the agent ends with a short list of the compromises it made. Before drawing, verify that `doctor` reports all checks passing and that Aseprite is attached.
```

### Caveat

The tools refuse to edit files on disk when Aseprite is detached, so the window must stay open and attached for drawing to work.

Risk, remote script: The install steps run a package from npm with npx and add a plugin to your agent, so check the package and its source before you run it.

## How to animate a sprite and export a spritesheet for your engine with Aseprite AI Artist

Repo: [with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist](https://github.com/with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 45 minutes | Basis: From the README

Turn a drawn character into a tagged animation and export it as a spritesheet.

**Who it is for:** A game developer who has a character drawn and needs idle or walk cycles for an engine such as Godot.

**The problem:** Animating each frame by hand and then packing a spritesheet is slow and easy to get wrong.

**The outcome:** A tagged animation cycle in Aseprite, exported as a spritesheet with an atlas, ready for your game engine.

### Steps

1. Complete the install steps for the Aseprite extension and your agent, then run `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist doctor`.
2. Open the sprite you want to animate in Aseprite.
3. Ask for the cycle, for example `/aseprite:animate 8-frame walk cycle` in Claude Code.
4. Review the frames the agent drew and ask for changes with `/aseprite:fix make him more menacing` if needed.
5. Export the result with `/aseprite:export spritesheet for Godot`.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the aseprite-ai-artist plugin from with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist, animate the open sprite <sprite name> as a <number>-frame <idle or walk> cycle and export a spritesheet with its atlas for <engine>. Expected output: a tagged cycle in the Aseprite document and an exported spritesheet and atlas file. Verify that the frame count and cycle tags match the request before exporting.
```

### Caveat

The README lists spritesheet and atlas, GIF or PNG export, but does not name which game engines are supported, so check the output format against your engine's needs.

## How to get a blind critique of your pixel art before shipping with Aseprite AI Artist

Repo: [with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist](https://github.com/with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Have a separate critic judge your sprite cold and fix only the blockers it names.

**Who it is for:** An artist or developer who has drawn a sprite and wants an honest read before publishing or using it in a game.

**The problem:** The person who drew a sprite tends to see what they meant rather than what is on the canvas.

**The outcome:** A cold read of what the sprite shows, a scored critique, and any blocking issues fixed one at a time with a blind A/B check on each fix.

### Steps

1. Make sure Aseprite is open with your sprite and the extension is installed.
2. Run `/aseprite:review why does this look off?` in Claude Code, or ask your agent to review the sprite in other clients.
3. Read the cold read and the score the critic gives.
4. Let the agent fix only the blocker named by the critic, or ask it to continue with `/aseprite:fix`.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the aseprite-ai-artist plugin from with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist, review the open sprite <sprite name> with the pixel-critic, write a cold read, and fix only the blocking issues it names. Expected output: the cold read, the score, and a list of which fixes were kept. Verify that each kept fix was preferred in the blind A/B comparison.
```

### Caveat

The README says the effect of this review on quality is not yet measured, so treat the score as a guide rather than proof of better art.

## How to batch-render sprites with Aseprite in headless mode with Aseprite AI Artist

Repo: [with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist](https://github.com/with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist) | Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Run Aseprite without a window so an agent can build a batch of assets in CI.

**Who it is for:** A developer who maintains a build pipeline or a batch of game assets and needs sprites produced without someone watching a window.

**The problem:** Producing many assets by hand, or keeping a desktop window open on a build server, does not scale.

**The outcome:** An agent working against a headless Aseprite instance that saves files only when the agent chooses to save.

### Steps

1. Install Aseprite 1.3 or newer and Node 22.6 or newer on the machine that will run the batch.
2. Run `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist install-extension` on a machine with a window if you need the extension installed.
3. Start the server with `npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist serve --headless --aseprite /path/to/aseprite`.
4. Point your agent at the server and give it the asset list to draw.

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Using the aseprite-ai-artist server from with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist in headless mode, draw the assets listed in <asset list file> and save each one to <output folder>. Expected output: one saved .aseprite file per listed asset and no changes to any file your editor has open. Verify that each file is saved and that the agent asked before switching modes if the window was not attached.
```

### Caveat

The README says headless mode is never a fallback, so if the window is not attached the agent asks rather than switching, which can stop an unattended batch.
