# AI use cases for AI Engineering Lab (zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab)

Repo: [zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab](https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab) | Use cases: 3 | Page: https://dedupedai.com/use-cases/zorost-ai-engineering-lab/

A free, MIT licensed, self-paced 24-week AI engineering course built around one fictional freight company, with 43 runnable notebooks.

This file holds every use case of this repo. Each one starts with a "## " heading and ends with its URL.

## How to start the 24-week AI engineering course today with AI Engineering Lab

Repo: [zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab](https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab) | Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes | Basis: From the README

Clone the repo, install requirements, and run Week 1 to generate the shared dataset.

**Who it is for:** A developer or career changer who wants a structured path into AI engineering and has no course yet, triggered by wanting to start without paying or signing up.

**The problem:** Learning AI engineering from scattered tutorials leaves gaps, and many paid courses require a signup or a paid API key.

**The outcome:** The repo is cloned, dependencies are installed, Week 1 is open, and the seeded dataset that later weeks reuse has been generated.

### Steps

1. Run `git clone https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab.git`
2. Run `cd AI-Engineering-Lab`
3. Run `python -m pip install -r requirements.txt`
4. Read START-HERE.md, then open curriculum/week-01 and follow its setup steps
5. Open the tracker in curriculum/tracking and tick the Monday row when Week 1 is done

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
Clone https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab into <target-folder>, install requirements.txt with python -m pip, then open curriculum/week-01/README.md. Report the Week 1 setup steps and confirm the seeded dataset was generated under data/.
```

### Caveat

The README says the GPU is optional until Week 8, but the setup steps and the exact contents of Week 1 are in the week folder, not in the README.

## How to build a retrieval corpus from the freight case study with AI Engineering Lab

Repo: [zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab](https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 120 minutes | Basis: From the README

Use the Week 1 seeded freight data as the retrieval corpus for a RAG exercise.

**Who it is for:** An analyst or engineer on a team preparing for retrieval augmented generation work, triggered by needing a realistic, shared dataset to practice on.

**The problem:** Retrieval exercises are hard to learn on toy text, and separate datasets for each lesson make it hard to see how skills connect.

**The outcome:** A working retrieval step over the ZoroLogistics dataset, with a metric and an error note as the course requires from Week 3 on.

### Steps

1. Run `git clone https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab.git`
2. Run `cd AI-Engineering-Lab`
3. Run `python -m pip install -r requirements.txt`
4. Complete Week 1 to generate the dataset, then open the Week 7 folder under curriculum/
5. Build a small retrieval index over the generated tables and record one metric and one error note (inferred, check the README)

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the AI-Engineering-Lab repo, complete curriculum/week-01 to generate the freight dataset under data/, then build a small retrieval index over it for the Week 7 exercise. Return the retrieval query you tested, the metric you chose, and one error note.
```

### Caveat

The README names Week 7 as the retrieval corpus step, but the retrieval library and method are described in the week folder, not in the README.

## How to learn coding agent harnesses with Claude Code or Cursor with AI Engineering Lab

Repo: [zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab](https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab) | Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 60 minutes | Basis: From the README

Work through Phase 4 harness lessons using the tools the course names.

**Who it is for:** A developer who already writes code and wants to use coding agents more deliberately, triggered by needing a structured way to learn harnesses and spec-driven loops.

**The problem:** Coding agents are used ad hoc, with no shared method for checking their output or building repeatable loops.

**The outcome:** A completed Phase 4 pass covering Claude Code or Cursor, with the week's use case artifact shipped and its metric recorded.

### Steps

1. Run `git clone https://github.com/zorost/AI-Engineering-Lab.git`
2. Run `cd AI-Engineering-Lab`
3. Open reference/skills for the Claude Code and Cursor tool guides
4. Open curriculum/README.md and go to Weeks 12 and 13, Harnesses and loops
5. Complete the Week 12 use case exercise and record one metric and one honest note

### Prompt to paste into your agent

```text
In the AI-Engineering-Lab repo, read the Claude Code and Cursor guides under reference/skills and the Week 12 folder under curriculum/. Summarize the harness steps for the Week 12 exercise and list the one metric the exercise asks for.
```

### Caveat

The README lists Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenCode as tools, but it does not say how each one is installed or licensed, so check the tool guides before relying on them.
