Who it is forSomeone who wants to try a local model without installing Python, drivers or a model server.
The problemLocal LLM setups usually mean installing runtimes, picking formats and fighting dependencies.
The outcomeA model running on your own machine from one executable, with no installation.
What you need first
- macOS, Linux, BSD or Windows on most CPU architectures
- Disk space and RAM for the model you download
- On Windows, only executables under 4GB run directly
Steps
- Download the example model with
curl -LO https://huggingface.co/mozilla-ai/llamafile_0.10/resolve/main/Qwen3.5-0.8B-Q8_0.llamafile - Make it executable with
chmod +x Qwen3.5-0.8B-Q8_0.llamafileon macOS, Linux or BSD - Run it with
./Qwen3.5-0.8B-Q8_0.llamafile - On Windows, rename the file to add the .exe extension before running
- When it works, pick a larger model from the pre-built llamafiles page if your hardware allows
Prompt for your agent
Download the mozilla-ai/llamafile Qwen3.5 0.8B example, make it executable and run it. Then ask it <question> and tell me how fast it answered on this machine.
Caveat. The 0.8B example is chosen because it is the smallest; expect simple answers until you move to a bigger model.
