How to give your coding agent IDE-level code navigation with Serena

Install Serena and connect it over MCP so your agent finds symbols and references instead of grepping files.

Short answer: Install uv, then run uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent; then check that the Serena command is available, then run Serena init to initialise and verify the setup; Do not install Serena from an MCP or plugin marketplace; the README warns those commands are outdated. All steps.

  • Cursor
  • Gemini CLI

Who it is forA developer whose Claude Code or Codex sessions burn tokens reading whole files in a big repository.

The problemAgents that rely on text search and line numbers waste context and make fragile edits in large codebases.

The outcomeAn agent that uses find symbol, symbol overview and find referencing symbols to explore code at the symbol level.

What you need first

  • uv, the only required prerequisite
  • An MCP client such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini-CLI, Cursor, VS Code or a JetBrains assistant
  • An LLM to drive the tools, since Serena itself does no reasoning
  • For some languages, extra language server dependencies listed on the Language Support page
  • Optional: the paid Serena JetBrains Plugin (free trial) for move, inline and debugging

Steps

  1. Install uv, then run uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent
  2. Check that the Serena command is available, then run Serena init to initialise and verify the setup
  3. Do not install Serena from an MCP or plugin marketplace; the README warns those commands are outdated
  4. Connect it to your client either with a launch command or by starting Serena in HTTP mode and giving the client the URL
  5. Install any extra language server dependencies your languages need from the Language Support page

Prompt for your agent

Install oraios/serena with `uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent`, run serena init, and connect it to my <MCP client> as an MCP server. Then use its find symbol and find referencing symbols tools to map how <function or class> is used across this repo.

Caveat. Serena only supplies tools; the quality of the work still depends on the LLM driving your client.
