Who it is forSomeone with old family photos or small web images who needs them larger for print or a site.
The problemOnline upscalers charge per image or upload your photos to someone else's server.
The outcomeLarger, sharper versions of your images made locally.
What you need first
- A Vulkan-compatible GPU (most integrated GPUs do not work)
- Linux, macOS 12+ or Windows 10+
- Node.js (Volta recommended) only if you build from source
Steps
- Run
brew install --cask upscayl(macOS 12 or later) - Open Upscayl from Applications; the first time, right click it and choose Open
- Choose an image, pick a model such as High Fidelity or Ultrasharp, and an output folder
- Upscale and compare before and after
- If a photo is out of focus, expect little change: Upscayl cannot de-blur

Install upscayl/upscayl with Homebrew, then upscale the images in <folder> and save them to <output folder>. Tell me which model you used and flag any that look unchanged.
Caveat. This card is written from the upscayl/upscayl README, not from a test run by Deduped. Before you start, make sure you have a Vulkan-compatible GPU. Check the repo for newer instructions before you rely on these steps.
