OpenAI is racing to raise $30B before Anthropic's IPO

OpenAI's $30B dash. Plus: Anthropic's next $45B compute deal, Waymo's 20,000 cars, and the OpenCode key breach.

Funding & BusinessEveryone covered this

OpenAI is trying to close a $30 billion round before Anthropic lists its shares in mid-November.

SoftBank and Abu Dhabi's MGX are in talks to join a raise that could value OpenAI above $1.4 trillion. OpenAI also met long-only and sovereign funds last week, the same week Anthropic held its own investor day. Some investors read the timing as a way to lock in money that might otherwise go into Anthropic's listing.

Our take

This is a fight over who gets to call itself the safe big bet. The two labs count revenue differently, with OpenAI netting out partner shares and accusing Anthropic of counting full contract value, so investors are comparing numbers that do not line up.
