Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4, a 1 trillion-parameter open model aimed at coding and cyber defense.

Nicknamed Le Chonk, it is a multimodal mixture-of-experts model with about 49 billion active parameters per token, trained on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own European datacenters. Mistral says it ranks first among open models on Cognition's FrontierCode, and a Mistral researcher reports a 64% human-preference win rate against GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3. Those are vendor claims, not independent tests.

Our take

Open weights at this size put a European model in the same conversation as the Chinese open models for coding, which matters if you want to self-host.
