Google's TPUs land at Oracle, and OpenAI wants some

Oracle is the first outside cloud to offer Google TPUs. Plus: Claude's 40% government discount, a ChatGPT lawsuit, and Scale AI's tracker complaints.

Google will sell its TPU chips through Oracle's cloud, and OpenAI reportedly plans to buy them too.

Google said Oracle will be the first major cloud provider outside Google itself to offer its tensor processing units to customers from Oracle's own data centers. The Information separately reports that OpenAI, a major Nvidia customer, plans to buy Google's TPUs; financial terms were not disclosed and the report cites a person familiar with the matter. The timing matters: Alphabet reports third-quarter earnings Wednesday, and Anthropic's IPO filing laid out huge TPU commitments, including a plan to spend $114.5 billion with Google Cloud. TPUs began as chips Google used only internally, and outside customers have rented them through Google Cloud since 2018.

Our take

Nvidia still dominates, but two rivals now have a credible second source for training chips, and that tends to improve pricing and supply for everyone.
