Block's Dessa voice AI runs locally on a MacBook

Dessa, a voice model trained on human speech. Plus: banks vs AI agents, Elvis suit, and OpenAI undercutting Anthropic.

Model ReleaseEveryone covered this

Block's new voice AI Dessa was trained entirely on human speech and runs locally on a MacBook.

Block unveiled Dessa, a voice model aimed at the part of conversation most assistants miss: people talk over each other and laugh before the punchline lands. Block says it was trained entirely on human speech to catch emotions text-based models miss, and that it can run locally on a MacBook M4 Max. Reports say it talks, laughs and cries in a human way. Those descriptions come from Block's launch and press coverage, not independent tests.

Our take

Local voice is the interesting part. If it holds up, a natural voice no longer needs a cloud round trip.
