Google's Data Agent Kit is generally available

Google has made Data Agent Kit generally available after a preview that ran through the summer. It is free, open source and designed to plug into coding agents Google does not own.

The kit has two parts. MCP servers connect an agent to more than fifteen Google Data Cloud services and expose live schemas and tools, while Google-written skills teach the agent practices such as optimizing BigQuery SQL or designing Bigtable row keys. It runs in Antigravity, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code compatible editors, and comes preinstalled in Cloud Shell and Cloud Workstations. The GA release adds BigQuery Graph, Bigtable and Managed Service for Apache Spark.

Google's pitch is that agents write decent SQL but know nothing about which tables exist, how they are partitioned, which ones a team trusts or why last night's job failed. The plugin repository carries 37 skills under the Apache 2.0 license, versioned properly with 1.0.0 cut on September 29 and 1.1.0 on October 13, so teams can pin a version.

InfoQ highlights one skill in particular, accidental-data-loss-prevention. It tells the agent to stop and get explicit user consent before anything irreversible, such as DROP TABLE, TRUNCATE, a DELETE without a WHERE clause, or deleting objects in production storage buckets. The catch is that a skill is guidance the model may or may not follow. It is not the same as an IAM deny policy, which refuses the call no matter what the agent decides.

Why it matters for developers: this is a ready-made way to give a coding agent real context about your data warehouse, and it works across most popular agents. It is also a clear example of the line every team should draw: use skills to shape behavior, and use permissions to enforce limits.

What to do: if you try it, pair the skills with least privilege service accounts and deny policies on destructive operations in production, and pin the skill version so behavior does not change under you.
