Google is shutting down Perspective API on December 31

Google's Jigsaw unit is shutting down Perspective API on December 31. Starting January 1, any moderation pipeline that still calls it will fail. Perspective has been one of the most widely used tools for scoring online comments for toxicity, used by platforms, publishers, marketplaces and online communities.

For teams that rely on it, the next two months bring a forced migration. That means finding a replacement, re-tuning thresholds that were calibrated against Perspective's scores, and checking that nothing breaks silently when the API stops answering.

Vendors are already moving in. Hindsight, an AI content moderation company, is putting up to $1 million in support behind teams that switch to its model, and pitches a guarantee against harm caused by content its model misses. Its founder, Dean Gebert, argues that a like for like swap "just moves Perspective's blind spots to a different vendor." His point is that Perspective scores how toxic a comment sounds on the surface. That works on obvious insults but poorly on coded language designed to look harmless, which is where bad actors have moved.

That pitch comes from a company selling a replacement, so treat its claims as marketing until you have tested them on your own data.

Why it matters for developers: a free, widely embedded API disappearing on a fixed date is an infrastructure risk, not just a product change. Moderation often sits in the critical path of posting, so a dead endpoint can either block every comment or let everything through, depending on how your code handles errors.

What to do: search your codebases for Perspective calls now, decide what should happen on failure, and run any replacement, whether a vendor, an open model or an LLM classifier, side by side on a labeled sample of your real content before the cutoff.
